p1406 and p0102 error codes

Ok so yes I searched and came up with
P1406 - egr valve

p0102 - Maf issue....

so I use a K&N air filter so im betting a cleaning on the MAF could get rid of the P0102. So find the egr valve and clean it?

weird part is the car runs fine for a while...then out of no where... if you are at a light and go to hit the gas... it chokes, sputters, and seems like it is running on 4 cylinders.... but if you drive like granny it willl let you get to whatever speed you want and cruize there....

that’s odd as if the problem is with the EGR you it usually only opens on the "mid acceleration" time (have heard people say in the 30 - 50 mph range but not for sure)

I had a similar problem on a 9.7 3.8 and I was able to diagnose it by disconnecting the wire plug on top of the EGR valve then seeing how it affected the performance; doing this I was abel to eliminate the possibility of malfunctioning EGR valve and sort out if the cause is elsewhere

best of luck

I have both errors back again....

car bucks and kicks on acceleration around 25mph and if I let off some it will stop.. then I can get to say 50mph and it kinda isnt noticeable... so yeah maybe egr...

you can clean them right?
with 186,300 miles id think that maybe my problem

yeah you can usually clean up the air passages in there; I think it is carbon that tends to build up in there.

ok so this funny... well not really... also been busy so couldnt update this thread...

MAF story
anyway... I sucked it up and went to autozone.. bought a reman one...
I dont like reman but hey.... still $140....
so the guy hands it to me and we put my core in the box.. we both look at the new one and it seems dirty... they have no more and the guy says it is under warranty... so I walk out to the car after paying for it and put it in... drive away and seems ok....
2 miles down the road problems are back... so I stop at the next autozone on my way home... explain the issue and the guy swapps it out for me... I put it in and am running late..... well the car seems ok until about a 1/4 mile.... same issues... well I go back the next day and they have to order another one... the guy is like... oh your 3rd huh... so I tell him that they are remans and I have had an issue with master cylinders on my pickup that were reman.. told him that if it does not do it I will buy a NEW one not reman and also a egr valve..... he orders it up and when it comes in...I get it and put it in.... VIOLA!!!!! issue is gone!!

even funnier is the fact that now my transmission no longer slipps??????
so I understand computer control... but the mass air flow controls the shifting of the trans too?????? car has been slipping since 75k and now has 188,880 miles!!!!!!

seems the egr may also be bad too but not on my list.. only a check engine light every now and then...... I have my drivers window to fix first.. which is a new thread....

I took the k&n out and cleaned it.. then oiled it and let sit on paper to let it drip off...

im thinking of buying a paper filter and see if they will give me 1 more....

I'd just switch back to a paper filter. I ran a K&N filter when I first got my car (pre-CAI) and my oil analysis showed more crap getting through than with the paper.

For negligible gains with a stock induction, I'd say it isn't worth it.

And yes, you can oil them too much and soak the pleats which will get through to your MAF.

As for the EGR, I had my old one stuck for about a year and had the SES light turn off/on several times a week. It never changed the performance/MPG but it was just annoying. I had to bite the bullet and get a new one to pass CA smog though. Its an easy enough install however...
