I'm pretty sure theres no danger what so ever with using overdrive all the time. Over drive just gives you better gas mileage on the highway buy adding the extra gear. Its the same as drive, but with the the od gear added so i don' t see how it would hurt in the city.

Yeah, it saves you gas. That's the whole point behind it. Some people argue it's wear and tear on the tranny because it has to shift an extra gear.

OD is a good thing. It's not bad to use it in the city. Your engine has to work less in OD. People who say OD is hard on the car don't realize by not shifting that extra gear your just putting extra strain on the engine and burning more gas.

USE OD.

I usually shift in and out of drive and OD. I put it in OD if im going over 60. Sometimes I even shift 1, 2, D, OD. When I start to slow down from cruising speed you know 75, 80 I shift down to drive at about 50. I feel you dont need an extra gear unless you are going a speed that its needed and drive seems to give you a better start or some get up and go. Sometimes it feels like in OD my engine actually has to work harder to move like its lugging around.

extra gear????

I am not a mechanic, but OD lowers the shift point on automatics! So, where the "extra gear" came from ? Instead of shifting @ 4, it shifts earlier.... So where is the EXTRA GEAR ??????

OD is fourth gear, it is called overdrive because the ratio is less then 1:1.

All you are doing when putting the car in "D" around town is keeping it from shifting into overdrive so if you're going below around 45 mph it won't make much of a difference. If you hold the pedal to the floor long enough the car will shift by itself into overdrive anyways because at that point you're going about 90 mph!!

Just leave it in OD all the time. Your tranny will know when it needs to be in or out of it.
