leaf blower? is it possible???

this is a weird question but i need an answer from someone who knows alot about superchargers. would it be possible to hook up an electric hand held leaf blower to your engine to force air in to it sorta like what a supercharger would do??? and if so would any thing else on the car need changed? by the way i have a 98 v6 camaro.

Hypothetically yes it could work. I had a friend experiment with a Heater blower motor as well. You may notice some effective gain but chances are it will overpower the engine with too much air, and not enough fuel. In order for the supercharger effect to work and kick in, you must have equal amounts of fuel to equal amounts of air. So if you cram air from a leaf blower, you'll need to load the cylinders with tons more fuel.

Doing so on a fuel injected motor such as the L36 would be tough.

You'd be better off and see more gain, by installing a Fast Toys Ram Air, and stepping up to larger fuel injectors (with more poundage per hour)

how exactly would i make the fuel amount equal the amount air coming in from a blower? just buy a bigger fuel pump or what?

*whew*
um, You'd have to run much larger injectors.
Yeah you'd have to install a high flow fuel pump.
And the most costly part may be the computer retuning to make up a custom fuel map with a matching timing curve.

You wouldn't be able to flick the switch on and off at will with this configuration. It would have to be dedicated.

I would figure a gain of about 15 to 20% more horsepower. Roughly 230 horsepower to 240 horsepower from an otherwise stock L36.

Now that I think about it, you'd also probably need a bigger Mass Air Flow Sensor.

This is actually kinda funny. My father-in-law saw on ebay an electric supercharger for sale. Eventually, someone bought one and sent some feedback on the product. It turned out to be a bilage pump from a marine engine. I guess the guy hooked it up and it only gave him approximately 2 lbs of boost. Seeing as how it was a constant volume output at all RPM ranges it was only "slightly" noticiable at low RPM's. At highway speeds it was like it wasn't even there. Pretty pathetic that it was for sale at $200 starting bid and ended up to be like a $50 part. If there was a way to make a variable electric fan that wouldn't shell apart at high RPM's, that might actually be the next type of supercharger. I'm sure it's been done, but not perfected. Like said before, a leaf blower would put out too much volume at a lower RPM and your air to fuel ratio would be WAAAAYYYY off! If there was some sort of relay or rehostat that could gradually increase the output as RPM's increase the speed of the fan, that would be cool. I would think the blades of the fan would have to be metal too. Plastic wouldn't have too much integrity and would eventually, in a short time, shell out and get sucked into the intake. NOT GOOD!!

I read about this once, and it said that it may put more air into the engine, but its not compressible or something like that and cant be used.

i think what ur talking about is the maximum effective cfm. you can only shove so much air into the intake b4 some just becomes waste since it cant be used fast enough.

Well yes that's correct. But what you mean is at the normal atmospheric pressure - 14.xx PSI. After so much air, it will be wasted, because it can't be forced into the engine. THAT'S the whole point of a supercharger...it is a compressor. It compresses, forces, shoves air down into the plenum and makes the engine use it. A leaf blower would only work as effective as a ram air kit would. Making sure the engine gets all the air it can take at normal atmosperic pressure. Which sure, if it was cold you could realize 10 to 15 more horsepower from it. But hey, for that money, just go buy a Fast Toys Ram Air system and be done with it.

Wink

Hey one time I strapped a pig to my wagon and it got faster. One time I even tried going downhill on a tricycle. Oh and one time I tried to use a bowling ball as a hammer.

Face it, sometimes you try things that JUST DONT WORK.

A leaf blower on a car would have the same end result.

You see a lot of speculation on the Net about this (google search "leafblower supercharger", but AFAIK no one has ever made it work.

I think the reason that it doesn't work is that a leafblower is designed to work against a very small resistance, just blowing into the open air. Try to use it to force air under pressure into something and the fan blades probably don't work well.
