I don't recommend the ram air mod to anyone.
You can do it for free or buy a kit which includes a metal sleeve. Either way your going to get little to no gains and a very dirty filter which can cause you to loose more hp. These questions are suppose to be in the sticky thread at the top. Since most people don't believe me and still insist on doing the ram air; here's the directions to the FRA (free ram air mod) The directions are for a 98 Z28 but it is the same thing except the air silencer (back part of your intake) might come off a little different. I know for sure it works I did it to my 98 V6 and know its not worth it, but heres the directions.

The ram air hoods like SS style have air flowing but don't function as ram air because the hood isn't sealed to the intake. I think the "Ultra Z" hood seals to the intake but I am not sure. In that case it would have more of a ram air function. But ram air on cars altogether isn't very functional.
The ram air kits are used to get air in from under the air intake and ram air hoods get air in front of the air box. Basically, it's either you get one or the other. People that want ram air usually just get a ram air kit or do the FRA because it is cheaper. A hood is more for looks. A aftermarket lid will gain you a lot more power then ram air ever will. Half way down on this webpage you will see the whisper lid. It's almost everyones first mod. and below the whisper lid is the ram air kit but don't believe those horsepower claims.
