how much longer till my car breaks again?

I got it back thursday night after getting the wires replaced which cost $250 something in labor/materials. My dads on me to sell the car and move on which I could do but I'm willing to give it another shot.
My mechanic said the wires he got from GM looked revised like they had extra coatings to prevent them from overheating again and he also said my car came with heat shields which he re installed.

I'm optimistic that my wire missfire problems are behind. What should I expect?

Unless you do this... http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78028 .. They'll be back... Sometimes in as little as a week. My mechanic said my 98 had heatsheilds and boot protectors, Misfires came back in just a week and a half and sure enough I fried a wire. After that it was my coil packs.

Im not saying you're going to get misfiring again in just a week, thats very abnormal yet it happened. You can probably get about 10, maybee even 20k out of them before it happens again. But I promise they'll be back.

If they are installed properly - you will be fine. If not - did you got any warranty on labor/parts from your mechanic? Next time get yourself good high-temperature wires (can be found under $50) and install them yourself, it isn't hard at all, you need only ramps or jackstands+jack for this

$250? Sounds like you took it to the dealership...only they would charge that much for such a job. If that is the case, they used the crappy stock wires.

I've had my Taylor wire & heat shields/boots combo for three years now with no probs.

Sounds like they must have got you for trouble shooting time or labor.
It can't be to hard to change some wires, the coil packs can be a pain some times.
I wanted to convert my car to a coil pack ignition but with all the problems I here about with ford and GM coil pack ignitions I'll keep my computer controaled distributor.
A good domestic car ( a GM mainly) is like a good wine it will get better with time.
See it is all ready hapening, your guy said the new wires look thicker and better protected than the old ones.
If some thing breaks get a new updated part that is at least an imrovement over the orignal part. You wont see that problem for a long time. Make sure it is worked on right too.
Ex. me replacing my external ballanced 2.8 for a internaly ballanced '95 3.4L.

Well, the main reason for me asking is because I'm going to the shore with my family in 2 weeks and I'm kinda hesitant to be 180 miles from home if it acts up again.
My mechanic got the wires from GM, I've trusted him in the past and I checked his work this time and everything is in the looms and routed where it was before, he didnt skip any steps.

I hope this is it, but I got this wierd feeling I'm on borrowed time.

I doubt seriously if they'd go out over a 180 mile period. I'm just talking long run basis. You should be good to go for atleast a month. If you're truely paranoid about it however, grab a spare wire or two and if it starts happening, replace badwire with spare wire. If there's no Autozone or you have no scanner, here's how you can tell which one is bad...
Unplug each wire from coilpack. If your engine runs slightly worse plug it back in UNTIL you get to the bad wire. Whichever wire has LITTLE to NO change in the engine's hesitating performance, is the bad wire. Replace with spare and you're set, but I highly doubt you would have to do it in just a 180 mile period. Even if you do get misfires, just go easy on her and she'll make it with no prob, they're not threatening early on... just very annoying.

Luck to ya.
