What does the "2nd" button do?

What does the "2nd" button do?
I went for a test drive with my gf in a 98 V6 Firebird. It was an auto, and I noticed a button in front of the shifter, below the radio that said "2nd." What does this button do?

It basicly disables 1st gear so you can have more traction in mud/ice ... it has no change in the car after that though.

yeah thats all it is, it just starts off in 2nd gear.
