I just bought my wife a 2001 V6 M5 Camaro.

I've been looking into mods for her and saw the Whisper Lid on TByrne's site.

But the lid on the car looks almost identical to the lid in the picture on TByrne's site.

How can I tell if the lid on the car is an aftermarket lid?

We bought the car used, so I don't know the mod level (if any).

The lid shows 3800II on it in red.

 

thats an aftermarket lid

it should be smooth on the inside and not have big pieces of plastic behind it in front of the intake......
it should be lid-rubber thing-throttle body.
stock would look like lid-air bellows (saddle bags for the lid)-rubber thing-TB.

a whisper lid says 3800 on it when you buy it.

a stock one has plastic on the inside like a parking lot lines (i dont know how to explain it) and aftermarkets are smooth.

 

Its aftermarket, now you should get exhaust, unless it too is modified.

 

Did some looking today, it has the Whisper lid, and a CAI. I think it's the SLP or something similar. It's not the ram air though.

It had a DIRTY paper filter, so I picked up a K&N and installed it for my wife.

Runs better.

I think the exhaust has aftermarket tips, but I'm not sure. That's the next thing on my list.

all V6s except the y87 package come with one turn down exhaust pipe. the y87 has 2 turndowns. if you can start her car and hear a little something, then you have an aftermarket exhaust. it wont be loud, but stock is just as quiet as a stock honda. you wont hear a thing with a stock exhaust.
