getting ready for rebuild and have some ques.
I'm thinking about rebuilding my 3.4, shes been running rough lately and with the mileage 147,000 i think its just about time. I was wondering if any of you guys that did this could give me some pointers, i.e. good deals and some do's and dont's. If you guys know any websites that demonstrate rebuilds, even if its just general info that would be awesome. I'm also looking for some facilities to use for the rebuild. I'm stationed at Henderson Hall near the pentagon and there's no automotive hobby shop on base. There is one at the Army base Fort Myer, but I'm not sure if they have the proper tools for a rebuild. Any help would be great. I've never done a rebuild before and I don't know what needs to be replaced. I'm counting on you guys!! Thanks in advance.
I just read your other post. Are you sure you need a rebuild?147k isn't that many miles for a V6.There are a lot of 3.4's out there with over 100k running nitrous.Good luck with your motor man, there are a lot of reasons it could be running rough.

the only reason I'm thinking about doing a rebuild is because I'm tired of a little things affecting the big picture. if you know what I mean. I mean I just want to have a fresh start for the engine. I've noticed in the past that if I floor the car it will let out a little puff of smoke at about 4000 or 4500 rpm. Plus I won't really be driving it to often during winter and if I am gonna do a rebuild... now would be the perfect time. Kevin, do you know anyone who's done a 3.4 rebuild that would be willing to give some advice? If someone tells me what needs to be done I can do it. I have a photographic memory, so if I take it apart I can remember how it goes back together, so that makes it pretty easy for me to do stuff like this. Anyway, thanks for the advice, I think I'm gonna hollow out my cat to see if that helps, if it does then I'll think about replacing it when its time for emissions. Talk to you later bro. Thanks again!
Have you been to www.firebirdv6.com yet?I know there are a couple of people on there who have rebuilt 3.4's.I've only torn mine down to the heads,I haven't really got any insight for you, sorry. But if you have the $$$ there are some nice aftermarket parts out there you can throw in while re-building.The weak part of the 3.4 is the pistons,I think the rods are actually forged. There are also a few nice cams and some heads out there.Good luck with the project and keep us updated.

any real mechanic can do a rebuild- you dont need a performance shop. but you want to make sure it is done right. i am on my second rebuild, and i am only at 40,000 miles. and i truly believe i am on my second cause my first was not done right. but it was all my fault- i trusted the wrong mechanic!. i would never venture to do it myself, but if you do, good luck to ya. i too say try firebirdv6. they got a lot of smart people over there.
