Gas Mileage

what kind of mileage do you guys get with the v6 motor? i recently bought a 1995 camaro with 82k miles on it last month that needed a few needed repairs and it only gets like 16mpg...about 240 miles on a full tank. i dont drive too agressively, and the car is completely stock. i doubt this is normal, so what may i be able to do to increase my mileage?

Thats definately not normal, I'm getting better MPG than that with a Z28 LS1 V8. Start small, Airfilter, Fuelfilter, Plugs, Wires, sometimes coils could lead to bad MPG before they go out... Is it an A4 or M5? Has it had an Oil Change and Tranny Fluid flush? Bad tranny fluid can make a car sluggish a bit and make it use more energy to get moving thus worse MPG...

Re: Gas Mileage

You probably need a tune up.

Around town I get 19-22 and on the highway as high as 29-30ish

I've heard though that the 3.4L engine isnt that good on gas, plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter and some other things, I cant think of right now.

can the way you drive really make the difference between 200 and 380 miles on a tank? either way, i know that 240 with a v6 engine is not normal. and i don't drive agressively.

300 , not 200... and Yes... I get 380 with a 25% Street / 75% Highway mixture of driving... 300 Just around town and light to light traffic, especially if I'm only at lower speeds up till 55... LS1's really don't start getting their good MPG believe it or not until 60 - 80 MPH even if you're lugging it in OD doing 45...

I calculated 30 MPG with mine doing 75 - 80 MPH all freeway driving once but when I got on the street, Doing 45 MPH in 4th Gear (OD), I actually only got 20 MPG...

The only way I could forsee myself getting 200 Miles to a tank is if something were majorly wrong, or I did 100 + MPH the entire tank...

I say do a major tuneup first, Plugs and Wires are relatively cheap... Heck I would go for some 8MM wires just for the upgrade, it saves ALITTLE on fuel... Oh yes, CHECK YOUR AIRFILTER!!! If your engine ain't getting enough air, then it runs leaner on air and richer on fuel... BTW You havn't done any mods like a 160 Thermo have you?

These big steam roller tires need air! I found 34 to be best with the 245 tires.

Re: Gas Mileage

just some random numbers from a couple of V6's I went through.. 90% of the driving was open interstate in Fl the rest was round town

1995 V6 3.4 running about 31ish mpg
1997 V6 3.8 running abou 29ish mpg

one other silly think to metion with my interstate driving I actually found the 89 octane will improve the mpg by about 3ish mpg but going to 93 octane has no better results (maybee minor) I think it is because 87 octane is designed to compuste perfectly for a compression ratio well under 10 :1 but I belvie the firebird V6 compression ratio is pusing 10:1..

Best,

Re: Gas Mileage

i had a mechanic check out my tune-up parts and they said that they were fine. however, i had my ses light checked and my egr valve needs to be replaced. could this be causing my poor mileage problems? if not, what else could it be? tire pressure is ok, im getting an oil change soon but it hasnt been 3k miles yet. would any fuel injector cleaner or engine restore fluid help at all? thanks for the input.

Re: Gas Mileage

Yeah I have a 94 3.4L and I was getting 30mpg after I had my cat cut off, but then the egr valve went out and I was getting 12-16 mpg. I was a bitch and the thing is that you have to buy a whole new valve you can't buy just the selenoid that is messed up. It was somewhere around 180 at Advance to buy a new one, so I got a used one from a salvage yard. It jumped back up to about 22 where it was before I had the cat cut off, never got that 30 mpg back. I was really sad about that.
