Gas Mileage
Being that a Chevy small block can only be bore and stroked to a maximum of 415 cubic inches. 427 on a stock block is very large.
A Viper engine is a 500 cube V10.
About 25% larger, like its not much of a gain. Well if you consider that a 346 is making 405 horsepower. That comes out to 1.17 horsepower per cubic inch. If you give a 427 the same 1.17 horsepower per cubic inch you'd make 499.59 horsepower.
That's if you don't even work on the engine. Its very easy to make 450 to 475 horsepower with an LS1 normally aspirated. If the same work was done to a 427 it'd make 583 horsepower. If you make 1 horse per cubic inch, bore and stroke are well worth it. That same number multiplies when you figure in forced induction.
The 350 is the pinnacle of the performance industry. But when you consider the entire realm of Hot-Rodding, the 350 is only mediocre at best. For a lot of us the 350 is merely a start of good things to come. Not the end all-be all. No doubt, you get respect running a 350. But you won't get any ooh's and ahh's over it.
When you look at small blocks alone, that range anywhere from 283 to 400 cubic inches. The average of those is 341.5
The 346ci LS1 is one of the best engines ever built and I am a huge fan of them. But as good as they are when you post their cube numbers against typical build ups, like 383's, 406's, or even as high as 455 cubic inch small block....346 ain't "huge". But that doesn't mean they aren't great!
