exhaust smoke and back fire

my 94 camaro smokes white out of the exhaust when i start it up but will die down again once i start driving it and will sometimes give a short backfire. could i be burning oil or is it something else?

Does the white smoke linger...or disappear quickly???

How's the idle quality???

it lingers for awhile and it idles perfectly

The lingering white smoke sounds like oil. Cause if it was coolant, it would disappear real quick into the air.

As for the backfire...that has me puzzled
