Enigne overheating?????

I'm hoping someone could help me with my problem...My temp gauge is goin nuts. It used to be at about 180 or so, now it goes up and down b/w 210 and about 225. After starting the engine, instead of it taking like 5 mins to heat up, the engine temp gauge will just shoot up in about 1 min. It started about a week ago so i checked and added a bunch of coolant. Then my coolant started to look from somewhere below the engine, it was gettin onto the belt and gettin onto other parts of the engine. I've heard that it could be my heater core and i did have a leak in the pass side, but i'm pretty sure that was just water, cuz it has only happened when it rained. Does anyone have absolutely any idea as to what my problem could be, i would really like to get this solved asap, cuz at 730 am, its cold without a heater!!

So your engine is running hot and you dont' have heat? Not sure about the lack of heat but my engine started running hot when the water pump started to go...also you might might to replace the thermo and flush the coolant system
