Cut-Out's

Hi everyone, I dont know much about exhaust cut-outs and want to know a lil more about it so can someone tell me the pro's and con's on having an exhaust cut-out. OH and BTW instead of buying a cut-out can i drill hole/s on each side on the muffler and get the same effect if i would of got an exhaust cut-out and if i do that would i loss power or gain power etc... Sorry for the noob question but please help me out and thanks in advance.

A cut out is just a piece of tubing welded into your exhaust with a capable extension coming off of it. You can uncap the cutout and the exhaust will take the path of least resistance, bypassing the muffler. The result is more power, but also more noise.

The advantages are the power and some like the sound. The disadvantags are that it will be loud, possibly rattle your interior and they arent exactly legal. A cop can techincally pull you over for driving on the street with your cutout uncapped.

No drilling holes in your muffler wont give the same effect. As a matter of fact I dont think you can even pass emmisions with holes in your muffler. A cutout bypasses the muffler competely. You can however buy a replacement muffler that will flow very well, almost as good as a cutout and get pretty much the same affect.

A cut out is pretty cheap compared to the kind of exhaust you would have to buy to get similar gains. I would get a electric cutout, but I need to stop spending so much money. An electric cutout can open and close the cutout with the push of a button, that way you don't have to get under your car every time you want to uncap/cap the cutout. An electric cutout is about three times as expensive as a plain cutout but still cheaper then a really nice exhaust system.

Anyone have a cut-out (before the axle) and auto-tranny? The plates on my center console (shifter) and the gear display (shifter also) rattle like hell on medium acceleration. My friend has an almost identical 97' Z28 (minus the T-tops) but he has the M6...his doesnt seem to rattle, but again - it's a manual setup (with leather - ie. doesnt have all the damn plastic)

Anyone know what I could do to make these quit rattling? The only thing I could think of is removing the cut-out I have and having a custom flange welded in right before the muffler exiting the rear of my car. Hopefully that would push the majority of vibrations somewhere other than under the car.

PS: I dunno why a bunch of people dont like their cut-out in P or N....mine sounds awesome all the time (minues the center console rattle)

Screw the cutout just run open manifolds/headers. My dad has a 69' camaro, we put headers on it cranked it up with out mufflers and it had to be the coolest thing ever. Oh, btw the transmission pan bolt rattled loose and the mirror kept falling down, so nevermind.

My friend ran straight manifold on his 4.3l blazer, sounded bad@$$ . But it would be easier around smog time to just screw the cutout plate in, or flip a switch if its electric.

My buddy has a Z28 with a cutout, he had an electric one but the day after he put it in, he got it ripped off on some street repairs. Now he's back to the manual system. But i must admit it sounds awesome! Also, you'll probably notice that there won't be as much backpressure when you accelerate. This is what i have been told anyways, not too sure if its true but it makes sense. I was thinking of puttin a cutout on my 3.8 but heard from a few different people that it sounded like crap so didn't get it.

I've got the Quicktime Performance electric cut-out on my 99' 3.8 and I love it. Of course, just like any other exhaust mod on a six it sounds like a wasp on steroids at high rpm's, but low revs and freeway speeds it sounds great. The question of back pressure....our cars don't require much back pressure at all. If you have a stock cat you'll get plenty just from that. With an open exhaust...just hold your hand six inches from the tips and that's all you need. With the cutout open during a hard acceleration, you won't have as much low end torque as you would with it closed. I guess it's just personal prefference. Opinions are like buttholes....everyone has one. The tricky part is going to be finding a spot to install it so that it doesn't hang too close to the ground. I had mine installed just in front of the right rear tire where the exhaust goes over the axle. (directly under the right rear seat) My cutout hangs probably 2-3" from the ground and I can't tell you how many people have told me while driving that I have something hanging from underneath my car. If you can fit it before the cat on the Y-pipe...that'd be the spot. I guess I didn't think of that one..

I spent $189 for the flowtech (y section that requires welding) and the electric cutout. Installation took around 1 hour for wiring. Piece of cake. As for the rattles.....non-existant, I have none. Duramat does wonders. Check my cardomain site for a pictcure of the install if your interested.

Has anyone ever gotten a ticket for loud exhaust with a cutout. The cops aren't to harsh around here but just curious.
