Cold Air Intakes
Cold Air Intakes
Are they worth the money? I'm a little hesitant on buying one. It cost's $585! That's two insurance payments! (I'm a poor college student, ha,ha,ha!) Is there any performance gains, and does it change the tone of the exhuast any? I've got a Magnaflow system on my car, so that may help!!
Re: Cold Air Intakes
I didn't see any noticable gain from adding my CAI. I bought the one from slp for my 94 3.4L camaro. Have you tried looking aournd e-bay or the forsell section? I bought mine used from some guy on another board and got a good deal for it. I did get a lil bit of gas mailage increase, not a ton but hey with they way gas prices are now a days every little bit helps. So its up to you but you have to ask yourself what ar eyo planning to do with the car. If your just gonna use it as a daily driver I'd probably say its not worth it at the moment. I remember when I was in college so money was extreamly tight so I know what you mean. but if you are planing on making major power out that car then I wolud say start with a good CAI and then exhaust. But again its up to you, its your moeny and your car no one can tell you what to do with it except you.
Re: Cold Air Intakes
Thanks for the reply, crasher88! It is my daily driver, but im also interested in making some power gains. I've already got an exhaust system installed on the car, so i guess maybe with a CAI and a Whisper lid it may be pretty good! We'll see. I will definetly check out ebay!
Re: Cold Air Intakes
585.00!!! Wow. Check out www.thunderracing.com, I have seen the CAI systems on their for v6 f-bodies in the 200.00 range. The gains from the CAI may not be noticable but they will be there.
Re: Cold Air Intakes
Any CAI over $250 is complete bull****. When I had a 3.8v6 Camaro, I bought the SLP CAI for around $170. And yes, it was worth the money. Noticeable difference in power down low and up top.
Re: Cold Air Intakes
You have to remember, im from Canada, so prices here will differ. Thanks for the replies everyone! Are there any other mods out there that will give my 3.8L a little bit of a boost. I'm kind of new to this. I bought the car about 4 months ago. Before that, i knew nothing about cars, except how to change the oil!!! I'm lucky though, my dad knows the in's and out's of cars!!!
Re: Cold Air Intakes
i live in canada also, vancouver, BC, but nonetheless, $500 CDN is a RIP OFF!!!!
just buy online, or 2nd hand... if i were you, i'd buy NOTHING from canadian stores, they royally rip you off, for the most part

Re: Cold Air Intakes
Thanks for the tip ianwells100. Yeah, i thought that price was a little high. I may go the internet path. Did you buy one from an American site or a Canadian one. Shipping may be expensive also. We'll see!! Thanks again!!
Re: Cold Air Intakes
A CAI should be one of the first mods, along with the exhaust. Both work better together than alone.
I actually installed the CAI first, about four months before the exhaust, and saw marginal performance gains. While the power was noticeable, adding the exhaust really opened it up.
Look on eBay or check the For Sale section.
Good luck.

but, as said immediately above, try ebay, camarov6.com message board, whatever you do DO NOT buy locally, you will pay through the nose for it
best of luck (and dont spend more than $200 US on one, they should never be more than that)

for the 3.4L, u can make really good ones....
for a 98 3.8L, i'd say no
u could make a crappy one, which is really frail.... so i wouldn't bother..
Re: Cold Air Intakes
I just got mine a few months ago from www.lmperfomance.com with the whisper lid (doesnt do much but make noise, a good noise) for no more than 350 for both and shipped, i think the CAI was under 200. I noticed a little bit of a boost, more noticable, by far, on those random cold nights we have here in augusta. if you want something that makes people take a look at your car, get the CAI and lid. Its pretty fun to floor it and make more noise than the civic next to you. My cat did back up only a few months later though, not sure if its related.
