Exclamation Check Engine Light = NO HORSEPOWER

Hey,

I am new to the message board. How is everybody?

I have a question about my '95 3.4L. It has ~105,000 miles on the clock. I have a check engine light come on when the car finally warms up. After that, I have absolutely no horsepower. I took it to a mechanic, and he said he could not figure it out with the diagnostic equipment he had, "Take it to the dealer." He did, however, tell me that my cat. conv. was clogged/melted and that I needed a new exhaust pipe.

Next, I had a friend of mine who knows about cars look at it. He shrugged and told me to see the dealer.

I have another friend that knows about Honda/Acura. He told me that it might be the O2 sensor that could be throwing the
code(s). He also told me to replace my sparkplugs, wires, cap&rotor, and fuel filter and see if that helps. I have been putting off some basic maintenance. Also, I started putting in 89 octane and Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner and that helped slightly.

Right now, I am unable to drive my car. I would like to get it fixed, but I want to avoid the dealer. Can you give me any suggestions on what the problem(s) might be? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

hey man, what were the codes?? your mechanic should've told you what they were. Being 105k miles, the cat could be done for its life. definitely go through the normal tune up procedure before taking it to a garage. all of it is doable by you with proper tools. change the plugs, wires, o2 sensors, fuel filter, air filter, buy yourself a haynes book, it usually has good details on the basic tuneup things. get your cat tested somewhere like a midas. you can more than likely change that yourself too to save the costs. ummm after all that, disconnect your negative and postive battery cables to clear out the codes in your computer. and see if that all works.

cap&rotor...no. I would say do the usual tune-up and see where you are. If that doesn't work I would say check...cat, O2 Sensors, and fuel filter.

If a mechanic told you that your cat was clogged/melted I would bet that this is the problem. We all know that air in with no air out = no power.
