Check engine code p0440

hi guys... My camaro since I bought it has had a problem. The check engine light comes on every so often and until I check it it wont go out. When i scan it the code P0440 comes up which says: "evap emmissions system error". I have changed the gas cap and the fuel tank vent valve. Anyone have any other ideas id like to hear it. thanks.

I had a similar problem on a 97 fbird. turned out to be a problem with the EVAP system. if I remember correct it was actually the purge valve ( something like a $20 part from the dearlship and real easy to install)

I have also heard quite a few people say that have had problems with the actual canister itself ( think it is in the rear wheel well), but if that is the case you'd expect to have a distinct fuel/exhaust smell

p.s. (EDIT) this one started to bug me after I posted as I remember when I diagnosed the problem on my car I did it the old fashion way of just swapping parts ( translation throwing away $$). Anyways, there is a proper way to do it and I found this with a quick search online...

hope it helps

Tim

With a P0440 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:

Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the code, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses
Inspect for damaged or disconnected hoses around the Evap purge solenoid
Check and/or replace the sensor
Check and/or replace the purge valve
Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks

The purge solenoid is on your TB with two wires and an evap line going into it. Its held in by one screw. Takes all of 60 seconds to change.

yeah thank u , i was acctually talkin about the other one, i guess its in the fuel tank? the purge valve?? i am switching that part u were jus talkin bout as well , i just got it(fed ex'd) in today then was going to put it on when i realized it was one number off from the acdelco part of my orginal one(it didnt have a bracket at all)maybe different year, so now i have to send it back and wait for that to arrive.

I had this SAME issue with mine. The one they ordered had a bracket, and a hose fitting on the end, rather than a hole for a screw and a flush mount seal. They told me this was the only one they could get. One number off.

hey dont worry because they do have the 79's instead of the delphi 78's(last digits for parts) so yeah now i have to send the old one back, but hey do u know what the valve for the canister should look like because i dont see any bolt holes or anything like that jus another bracket like for the solenoid.....are they supposed to have that ???
