change oil soon light

so this is actually on my commuter car which is a 2000 gran prix, but it’s the same 3.8 as in the camero/fbird… anyways I’ve been on synthetic for a while, then on my last change I decided to try a K&N filter, other than that nothing different and drives exactly the same. Then Friday night when I was out the “change oil light soon” light came on when I was leaving; after a couple of minutes it went back off. And, for the last two or three times I drove the car it comes on a start up and then goes back off after a couple of minutes

anybody know what that light is saying?? It’s not an ses light and there is no codes.. is it maybe just trying to somehow read if the oil is clean?? or oil pressure?? or is it a timed/millage deal?

Any help is appreciated

Tim

p.s. I checked the level/color and it looks a normal color (not brand new oil but not real dirty)… level actually looked a little overfull so I’m going to go ahead and drain it/ put in new and get the level exactly right and see if that has any effect

You probably forgot to reset the oil reset light. You can do it in the DTC center. Pull up the "Oil Life" function and hold the reset button until it sets to 100%.

2000GTP, thanks for the info it is appreciated...

yeah that is exactly what I did, because when I changed my oil last time it was before the light actually came on; also does that sensor actually read anything or is it just a timed/mileage deal?

Best,

Tim

Its just a timed sort of deal, there is no sensor that monitors the cleanliness of the oil
