Can I use a Jumper Wire to pull code on 96 3.8

I used to do it on my 87 G. National but never tried on my Camaro. If so which slots do I stick the wire in? It's been a long time since I've had to do this and my memory's a little vague. Turn the key to run I think, and then connect the wire?

autozone or advanced auto will scan your car for free but the light has to be showing not stored.
