Cam for 3.4l SFI-DIS Engine, Need Advice
I have just recently installed a 1994 Firebird L32 SFI-DIS in my s10. Controlled VIA 1993 Camaro ECM. I have major top end, but I am use to low end, and that is what I want/looking for on this engine. I like to spin tires, bark 2 and 3rd. I plan on entering truck in burnout contest. Due to cam position sensor, I know I have limited choices on the cam I can install. I have found 4 cams that should work. I know how a cam works, how to install one, but I do not know how to "read" the specks to know which one will give me low end power.
Please Help me decide which one to use.
Comp Cam:
226 In/236 Ex, .463 In/.474 Ex, Lobe 112Deg
Lunati1:
228 In/228 Ex, .465 In/.465 Ex, Lobe 112Deg, CL 106Deg
Lunati2:
195 In/205 Ex, .405 In, .427 Ex, Lobe 112Deg, CL 108Deg
Crower
254 In/246 EX, .6176 In, .6016 Ex, Lobe 114Deg.
On one of the s10 boards I attend the cam that comes in the CRATE 3.4l supp. has massive tourqe, but is designed for carb is:
204 In, 216 Ex, .427 In, 454 Ex, Lobe 107Deg, CL 107Deg
If you know of any others, please post brand, place, specs, etc.
Much thanks in advance!!!!

I'll be honest. I don't know a lot about cams, etc. but I do know what they are and basically how they operate in an engine, I even know how to draw them (thanks to Engineering Class).
What I'm wondering is basically on the 3.4 engine what type of increase are you going to see with cams? Is it large or very minute? Any descriptions of the increase and benefits (and losses) would be helpful. Thanks,
Mark

Power increase, no, I want lower tourqe!! Must spin tires!!!! I don't know how to read them numbers. Thats why im asking. I am willing to give some top end to get my low end back.
But being an engineer, give me insite??
I have on it:
headers
custom exhaust
8mm wires
roller timing chain
power pullys
Plan on:
1.6 rockers
msd coil packs
19lb injectors
oversided TB
holly fuel regulator
I guess cam to get my low end back that my 2.8 had

I'm surprised you think the 3.4 has good top end power. My 3.4 camaro will do a burnout and leaves hard enough, but it's all over after the 60'. It's so slow on the top end it's like cruising down the highway. It almost seems like you need a gear change, not a cam swap.
The ride had lots of low end power before the engine swap with my 2.8L. It has to be the engine. What else could cause it to loose low end power?? I finally installed a rigup air intake system this weekend, got very slight tad bit of my low end back.
Port and Polish the heads on it. The flow of the stock 3.4 heads really suck. You could port the intakes also. The low-end loss could be from the headers, but I doubt it, unless you're running them open.
I cant really read the cam specs that good either, but getting the heads done will really help. You could always call lunati and the other makers and ask which ones would be the best for your application.

ok, for low end power out of the cams listed , wolf is correct the second lunati would be the best. but here is a thought , take the cam from the old 2.8L out and put it in the 3.4L... i dont know the specs on the cam that was in your 2.8L but it should behave the same in the 3.4L as it did the 2.8L.
but if i were you and i wanted to be able to get the tires blazing i would throw a 4.10 or higher gear in it. a gear isnt an easy swap, but its a lot easier than a cam..

The 3.4l heads flow same as the 3.1 and 2.8l heads correct??
The headers and exhuast are the same as what was on my 2.8l before.
Port and polish the whole setup is in mind, but I have other things I need to do before then.
I had thought of putting the 2.8l TBI cam in this engine. However, I know when going from carb to TBI, cam has to change (ecm doesnt like carb cam). Wondering if going from TBI to mpfi/sfi would act same and not work. Also, the 3.4l has a cam sensor trigger on the front, which the 2.8l does not. Thats where I'm stuck at
I had debating on contacting summit for pros and cons of cams, but they don't stock the cams listed. I guess my best bet would be attempting to contact lunati directly. However, they do "custom" make cams,
, but sure it would cost a few pennys more then a otc one.
BTW, anyone explain to me how to reference image a pic onto this board. I did the way I know, and it didnt work.
