Air Tempeture Sensor Mod...?

The other day a friend of mine gave me a call and siad he got this part off of ebay for ONE dollar, and that it was supposed to give him him 20 hp. After i finished laughing, I told him to come on over and i would put it in. He has a 99' rs with no cat, k*n, 40 series flow master (which sounds completely like ****, kinda like rice crispes..snap, crackle, and pop)... SO he brings this thing over, I read the paper it came with, and basically you disconnect the air tempeture sensor and plug this little diode (not sure if that is the correct term) into the terminals of the harness which plugs into the sensor. After i reset the computer i could immeadiately hear a change in the idle. It actually sounded good Alomst like the rich fuel mixture was putting out the flame from the spark! It still sounded like **** when reved, but n e ways....It was running way rich and i couldnt tell a difference. What do you guys think? I will post a link of the product from e-bay if you want, I was just wondering if any you have tried it and the results you got. Thanks my fellow domestic enthusiasts.

It is a $0.30 resistor

No matter what anyone says don't mess with the IAT, Don't move it or replace it.

its tricking the computer into thinking that the air is colder thus more dense, when the air is denser , you can dump more fuel into the engine. its a great way to !@#$ up a cat and O2 sensors

In some cases it can help, and for a forced induction setup that is pretty mild it can help keep fuel ratios in line. On my Miata which had a supercharger there was included in the kit a relay with a resistor on it that was triggered by a boost switch, when you get into boost the relay flips and puts the resistor in the air temp circuit and richens things up. I had it wired so that the resistor was always in the circuit tho, never had a prob with my cat or anything either. Others use an adjustible potentiometer so they can play more with how much they richen things, so I'll stop rambling now and just say if you have played with how your car ingests air and are getting a little lean then its something worth thinking about. For most people its probably a waste.

you never had a problem with your cat becuause there was more air coming into the engine....... when you dump fuel into the engine by tricking the computer into thinking there is extra air and there isnt, then you are going to be creating a lot of unburned hydrocarbons in your exhaust- a common cause of a clogged cat

well atleast 98% of the time I was not in boost, so no extra air, but I had the resistor in the circuit so there was extra fuel 100% of the time, how much extra I can't say for sure, but it made a noticeable change in the A/F ratio gauge I have (not real precise an instrument I know), and I had no cat problems. It depends on the car I guess, it can be different for camaros and their fuel management but it definetly didnt hurt in my case. The reason I had it wired to be on all the time BTW was because I had a lean stumble coming right off idle after putting the supercharger in and leaving the resistor on all the time helped cure it, it seems the majority of the miata guys with a supercharger do the same thing. Anyway I don't want to turn this into a miata board, I just wanted to contribute to the knowledge base here.

Who still has a cat on there car...My friend does not Any time you get more breathing a richer fuel mixture does not hurt.

your stock MAF will compensate for the added air without tricking the computer unless you are pullin in a lot of extra air.

i still mave my cat because i have emissions testing and really i dont mind having it, it might make my exhaust a little louder if it were not on there, but i dont mind. the modern high flow cats dont really restrict exhaust gasses much , there have been studies that show that the cat is less restrictive than the bend in the tubing that goes over your axle
