To put the LT1 engine in your V6, you would need a complete K-member (engine/suspension support) from a V8 car, heavier front springs, a new trans, a new 1-piece driveshaft. If you don't have a limited slip differential, you will end up doing one-wheel burnouts rather than accelerating, so you need a rear axle assembly with a posi (standard equipment in all V8 4th Gens), plus the dic brakes would be a good idea. In addition to the engine, you need a matching PCM and wiring harness.
There is a "sticky" post on engine swaps.

Re: 96 camaro question on engines
What is your 8th VIN digit? This will tell what it originally had. S=3.4, K=3.8, and of course P=5.7. For 1996, all V6s were 3.8. 1995 had the 3.4 and 3.8L available.
