thats funny--perfect gear--65 at 3000 rpms
good luck with that high 13 ambition. that would really prove a 3800 stall and 4.10s worthy in my book. but if you only get high 14s i am going to be mad.

If you've got the traction issue squared away, step up to running a trans-brake...and launch around 3,000 to 5,000 RPM. You should hit high 13's then.

You are running NOS right 13's in a V6 with those mods?

that is still high, but thats the price you pay with 4.10s

i just got my tax return back a week ago and over spring break i was considering putting 3.73s in my car. from the other posts i think this is the best gear for me because i do drive like 60 miles a day (to and from school). do you guys think this would be too big of a gear? how much is this going to effect my gas milage and odometer? i have a 98 A4 so i have 3.08s i think.

never raced on a track, only a few people on the "drag strip" by my house. id like to go to a track this summer though. i only know of one and its not too close to my house. like 2.5 hours i think. maybe a little less. ive had my car less than a year.

3.73 are only going to help you if you race. yeah, you might beat a few people off the line at the stop light in town, but is that what you want gears for. that and to have more wear on your tranny and worse fuel economy? i am not saying they are bad for everyday driving, but there are more mods out there that will benefit a street car a whole lot better.
and before people start smacking, 3.73 are good gears-your gas wont be affected THAT much, and your tranny will still last another 100,000 miles. but if you dont race, what would you want them for?

I'm not a fan of the higher numerical gears.
I have run:
3:08's
3:23's
3:42's
4:10's
I have a 1997 A4 bird.
I would suggest for any A4 person go with 3:42's
Any higher and I'm not a fan of.
But why you ask???
Well, when you change gears your speedometer and odometer. Your 118 mph speed limiter will be reached sooner due to the previous statement. Your car will not max out the rpm in each gear due to the odometer being off.

00-02 V6 owners can get the Hypertech unit and successfully adjust for gears.

There are many little units that supposedly adjust for gears but I have heard of SOOOOOO many people not getting them to work.
Jet has a SCU (speed control unit), SLP has a recalibrator and so on.

If you go to a 3:42 gear then you can attempt to find a GM dealer who can program a Y 87 V6 vin number into your car. This was a factory programmable option. You could eventually find a GM dealer who can assist you.

What gears do I run???
3:23's

3rd gear is below a 1:1 ratio so it has to put more power to the ground than before. For that matter, even an overdrive will still put more power to the ground that before...

200 HP x 1.34 (3rd gear) x 3.23's = 866 multiplied HP
200 HP x 1.34 x 3.42's = 917 multiplied horsepower

For your setup though, you may be right, a 3.42 may be better for you, and perhaps a step up from stock torque converter.

It really depends on what you can live with. Some people like myself really don't care if I am revving at 2,500+ RPM at 70 MPH if its worth the power I am making. 3.23 to 3.42 is a very minor gain, but 3.08 to 3.42 is fairly decent. 3.08 to 3.73 is night and day. Gas mileage will still be 20+ MPG even with 4.10's.

Now eventually on my '79 I plan to run a Gear Vendors under/overdrive unit behind the tranny. So that my 6th gear will be reduced another 22%. Acting like a 7th gear at a 0.39 gear ratio, Allowing me to cruise with 4.56's at 70 MPH at just 1,750 RPM. But a GV U/OD kit costs a lot. Then again, how many 12 speed cars do you see on the streets???

3rd gear in the T-5 is 1.34:1 like I had first stated. Fourth gear in the T-5 is 1:1.

Don't test me, you'll lose.
