3.4 with security problem

I am not sure this belongs in here but it looked like a good start. I have a 95 with a 3.4. In the past month or so the security light will come on and my car will not start for about 10 minutes. I have been talking to alot of people and I have a pretty good idea that it is a computer problem. But it has only done it maybe 3 times. I am just wondering exactly what the problem might be and a general cost on fixing it. I have also been told that if it is a computer issue that no one will or can fix it but the dealer. Is that true? The car is an auto with about 202,000 on it. It is my daily driver as I am trying to keep the miles off of the 02 so it is important. Thanks for the help.

Re: 3.4 with security problem

the security light has been on in my car for 1.5 years now. but mine doesnt have any problems starting up. i took it to a few local shops but nobody could give me an answer on how to fix it. they all told me to take it to the dealer. so that would prolly be ur best bet. good luck

Re: 3.4 with security problem

The security light in my camaro has been on for over 5 years and i have had no problems w/ it starting or anything. I just pay it no attention and everything seems to be fine. Need to take it to the dealer though to get it checked out.

Probably in the VATS in the lock cylinder or steering column. Could be the resistor in the key too. There's a way to bypass the system if you don't want to spend the money to fix it.

Thanks. I was kind of hoping there was a way to bypass it. This car is just costing me more than I paid for it lately.I hate to spend all of this money on it. Could you give me more information on how to bypass it so I can pass it on to my fiance? Thanks

Re: 3.4 with security problem

There are only 15 different resistor values for the keys. Measure the resistance across your key with a multimeter to find out which resistor you need, then you can pick one up at Radio Shack for a little bit of nothing. You just need to splice that into one pair of wires at the base of the steering column. I'm not sure which wires, but I'm sure if you search on something like "camaro vats bypass" you'll find all sorts of information.
