3.4 overheating!
ok so i just bought a 95 quasar blue 3.4l camaro about 2-3 weeks ago. it does have 111,000 but it is in damn good condition, hell i drove it 2 hours to get home from where i bought it.. i noticed after about a week and a half after i got it the temperature was getting really hot.. i mean 250 to past the 260 point..also, my heat wouldnt work, it would blow out ice cold air and VERY rarely it would blow out lukewarm air for about 20 seconds then get cold again.i thought maybe it could be my fan not working or something but i checked it and it was fine..i drove around with my car like this for about 4-5 days and then i brought it to my mechanic. he told me it was the thermostat so he put a new one in and it was fine for the last 2 days, then today i noticed it starting to do the same thing again.. what is wrong with my car???!?!? thanks for your help
Yeha turn you AC on and pop your hood and go out and see it, The fan shoudl turn on with the AC no matter what.
Then wait for the car to heat up and check. Also look just above the crank pulley, do you see any signs of coolant leaking? Might be the water pump.
also make sure all the air is out of the systemm its a pressurized system, if there is air in it will overheat.

ok well, my mechanic put in some gm head gasket sealer stuff that was suppossedly going to hold up for a little while till i got some more cash until he could do the head gasket..but it only worked for like a day and it was running just as hot as it was before he put the sealer in.. my dad thought maybe the thermostat he put in the first time was a defect or something so i went out and put in a 180 degree thermo today.. my car was running good after that for a few hours at about 185-190 and then the temp started rising again. when i was driving it it went all the way up to 260 and didnt get any cooler so i had to stop and shut off my car. i was driving back from my girlfriends house and my car started overheating, it got up to 260 and then it went all the way back down to approx. 185 and stayed that way untill i reached my house (i live 2 miles aweay from her and my car was cool the last mile)... do you think it's really the head gasket or something else causing this?
*** I forgot to add that when my car starts to overheat the heat in my car stops working and it blows out cool air.. whats the deal with that??

your heater stops working because your leaking all the water from somewhere. The heater core is in the top of the engine coolant/radiator system, and so even if you're 1/2 gallon low on coolant, or possibly even less. its not going to flow through that, or at least not enough to heat it up.
I dont think its your head gasket, because if it was, you would be getting ****-poor performance and blowing steam all over, and probably have water in your oil, and oil in your water, etc. So unless your car's oil looks like chocolate milk, your blowing steam, or your car feels like its running on 2 cyilnders, then you probably dont have a g head gasket problem.
I know some auto parts stores stell this UV reactive dye that you can put into your cooling system, then use their special glasses and uv light to look for leaks. They run around 30 bucks if i remember correctly. You can do this, but sometimes you can just spot the rust where it was leaking from yourself. Look below your water pump, on your crankshaft pulley and harmonic balancer, and look where the lower radiator hose enters the engine. thats where yo'll notice rust if its leaking from the water pump.
Otherwise, just fill it up with water, run the car and let it heat up to operating, and look around for the leak. Dont drive your car past that top mark on your temp gauge, your likely to warp your head if you do.
Take it to another mechanic if you dont feel confident looking for the leak yourself, but I doubt its your head gasket.
AIM me or e-mail me if you want, and i'll try to help you track down where its comming from. But in my honest opinion, i really doubt its your head gasket.

I just had a similar problem. I changed my water pump but it still overheated so i blead the air outta the system and it worked perfect. No overheating or anything.
Wouldn't it help to do a pressure test or something to find out where the coolant is leaking from??? Thats how i discovered where my leak was.

my mechanic did a pressure test and he said there were no visible leaks and that it was loosing pressure, so it must be the head gasket.. i think i'm gunna take it to another mechanic..how much do u think puttin in a new head gasket would cost with all the labor..i heard it was a bitch of a job..
Re: 3.4 overheating!
Okay guys, I've recently been learning alot about cars. Just a couple months ago I didn't know Sh*t about my car (2001 Camaro V6).
But I've been thinking of putting a fan switch in my car. I am confused on when to use it. I know when my engine is getting hot is the best time to use it. Sorry if this is a dumb question (remember I don't know much about cars), so does my fan turn off when my car isn't moving? Or is it always on?

Re: 3.4 overheating!
something major is definetly wrong. I have no heater core because basically i dont need it in arizona. when i turn on the heater it blows cold air. no point in spending 300 dollars for something i dont need. i live in 115 degree weather, i have my A/C on obviously, in traffic, in 115. my temp never goes above 200. why? Because i have no cat. I suggest to all camaro owners who want some sound or to cool there engines. Take out your cat! The car breathes soooo much better. Of course if you can in your state.
