1998 Camaro V6?s

Since I got my 93 Z28 my wife wants one. She will settle for a V6. Anyway I found one SUPER GREAT SHAPE with T-Tops!!

Anyway it has 141k on it...is that a lot for this motor 3.8?

Like I said its a 10 on a scale of 1 to 10.

Have not drove it yet ...will Monday!

$3500.00 is the asking price.

If it's in the shape you say it is, $3500 doesn't sound like a bad price. 141k is quite a few miles though.

For that price I'd say it probably has some engine problems and the fact that it has so many miles on it gives me a little more reasoning for that thought. However I would encourage you to take it for a drive (you never know untill you try) and if you like it and you think this is what your wife want's I'd buy it. If you do buy it you might want to take it to a mechanic to get checked over. I have the exact same car with 55K miles on it and it runs and drives like a dream. For that kind of price, even with that many miles, I wouldn't pass it up as long as you find no major fault in it.

Re: 1998 Camaro V6?s

i got a 98 with ~75k on it now. i can tell you that if you're willing to look around a little more it would be worthwhile to find a 99 or a 2000+. The newer ones have electronic throttle control and the 2000+ actually have a reworked exhaust manifold that is pretty close to a header setup. some say there's a measurable performance difference with that setup. at the vary least you won't dread changing your spark plugs when that time comes, like you would in 98 and older.

as far as that particular car, make sure it's not leaking too much oil from the rear main seal. it WILL leak, just to what degree is the question. ask if the alternater has ever been swapped. if it hasn't, be prepared to do it. check that the belt and plug wires are in good shape. as far as the internals, if the car hasn't endured nitrous or a highpressure turbo, it should still run like a top at 300k miles.

The exhaust manifold design on 00+ cars does make it alot easier to do simple plugs and wires agreed, but don't worry about throttle by wire, its gay, if I could have an old fashion cable TB, I would take it.

For the most part the car will be fine... But remember its a high mileage f-body, alot of the same things with a v8 f-body. If its an auto keep an eye on the tranny may be good but 140k is alot, motor for the most part should be fine except for the rear main seal. May need to do some ignition work with that high of miles(plugs, wires, coil, guy could have already done it for you) And expect some normal f-body stuff like window motors and such.

If its in great shape and drives great I woudl get it. Can't gurantee no problems but for a car for $3500 and 140k, I think it will hold up to your expectations and more. Just keep in mind its 7 years old and has 140k

That car is the same year as mine and has 98,000 miles more!

Seriously! Low mile Camaro's can be found easily at great prices!

I'd look a little more.

Yah, i think it was in the 5th gen forum some guys were arguing that throttle by wire is faster than a throttle cable. I don't understand that at all - how can a non-physical link be faster than a physical one? I could understand it if the throttle cable was like 20 feet long, then naturally there will be some slack, but otherwise a 3 foot long physical wire is going to respond faster than a computer controlled engine, and have less chance of going out on you.

EDIT: To original poster: I was thinking about a V-6 camaro for a daily recently (about 3-4 months ago) and looked around. I found several 96/97 cars witht he 3.8l with under 70k miles for around $3,500...and these were at dealers not even private party. I saw one '00 model with something like 45k miles for i think it was $4,500. I'd keep looking if i were you...141k miles is a lot. Even if the engine internally is in good shape you will soon find yourself replacing plugs, wires, alternator, fuel pump, fuelf ilter, tires, brakes, air filter, O2 sensors...more parts wear on a vehicle with that many miles than just the rings and valvetrain If most of this has been taken care of allready then don't worry about it, but i would find out exactly what's been replaced before buying.

The 3.8 is one of the most durable engines around. If the previous owner took good care of it, it should be good for some time. I would worry more about the transmission than the engine.
