WRX-STi = No big deal
WRX-STi = No big deal
North on US-101 about 8pm, 4 lanes of post-commute traffic, filtering homebound, reasonably light.
I'm flowing in the #1 in the SS at about 65. Approaching in the #3 is this brand new silver WRX-STi, clean and populated with a young turk.
I sense he feels emboldened. Hondas and Toyotas aren't much fun anymore for him. He needs to tangle with a real fighter. Beating up on some lightweights makes him feel powerful, possibly even a welter-weight division contender..
We approach the civic-center hill and descend, as the freeway opens another left-hand lane for the carpoolers (HOV). I stay in the same lane, now #2 and Mr. STi dashes into the left, he motors up to my window and the action gets a little more dicey.
We both motor up to about 75 and he can't shake me loose. Slow cars in the left, necessitate a lane, or two, of changes so I let the prey take the first step forward. A downshift and he moves promptly and quickly. I make a quick glance in the rearviews for the "Crown Vic" and confirm the "All Clear" to myself. Dropping back to 4th and a simple mash of the throttle propels me immediately towards his taillights. I see a brown puff from his exhaust (Blown shift?), possibly indicating that Mr. Turbo is functioning. But that doesn't matter, I accelerate directly up to his tail, slow briefly, check another lane, and blow past at about 100. Hitting 5th.. a few moments, I lay off the throttle at 130 with Mr. STi stuggling about a football field back.
Its not over...
A minute later the Subaru comes motoring up, again on my rightside, just at my bumper. I've dropped back to a boring 70 by then and he is catching me. I wait until he gets to my passenger door, then bang it into 4th with a little gas before the clutch drops and the tires bark. We're both on it again. He tries mightily to hold his RPMs, but can't produce the power necessary to accelerate in the upper ranges like the big boys.
After taking the SS up to about 115, I drop back to 70 again and call it a days worth. He passes and waves respectfully.
All-in-All, I assume that the Subaru is quick off the line, and good 1/4 times too, but in the real world of freeways, where the roll has already begun, HP is king.

Re: WRX-STi = No big deal
It's no big deal just like any other 100-102 mph car would be no big deal for your car. Any car may have a cult following but traps like that are just average today. Whether it was an SRT4, an LT1 F-body, or any of the 90s turbo imports (all stock of course) the results would have been the same.
