Win/Lose - Ugly day at track
Win/Lose - Ugly day at track
So it's Wednesday Drags and I figured I'd go try it again. Hadn't been out in over two years and the car was still running pretty good.
(I have a 1996 Z28 SS with several mods)
Pass #1 - Time Qualifications
Lined up next to an LT1 Formula. His was black and filthly, just like mine. Two dirt-bag black F-bodies at the lights. We both launch at near identical times, but he grabs traction and immediately takes off ahead. My car is running stock Continental street radials (total crap for draggin) immediately spin. So what do i do? I give up on first and slam 2nd. Result: Spin. The tach is showing 4500 and running up to 5000 with near zero traction. I give up on 2nd and hit 3rd. Result: Bogggg. The Formula is now 4 car lengths ahead of me...easily! So I just wait.... As the SS begins to build steam, the Formula begins to come back into view. As I near 6300 RPM, I am aside the Formula
and about 200' from the end of the 1320. I hit 4th and ride it out with a crappola 13.69 @ 109. My 60' was 2.46!!!!
Okay, so now I have to dial-in my time...(Will I have better traction next time? Will I spin 2nd again? If I am lucky, what would my time be?) I might break out, but with my Continentals, nothing is for sure. So I pick my estimate.
Pass # 2 - Estimate: 13.50
This time, I line up next to an LT1 F-body Z28 with dial-in set at 14.0. The lights set off and he gets his 1/2 second launch advantage. My light trips, and I, AGAIN, go into spin mode. (Now I know that it's not wholly the continentals' fault, but the track is quite slippery too, as I now recall being stopped so a track worker could swab the lane with his mop before I lined up.) However this time, I pulled back on the power applicator and the car moved forward with a tad more traction. I hit 2nd and it's spin city again. I lighten up and it grabs. I wind up 2nd and 3rd and pull 4th and beat out the Z28 by a car length. Unfortunately, I broke out of my numbers with a 13.32 @ 110. My 60' was still pathetic at 2.42. While my lane partner wins with a silly-@ss 14.13!!! I go home dejected and miserable.
Continental Street Radials are never to be used at the drag strip!
