Supercharged 5.0 vs. 383 LT1...
Supercharged 5.0 vs. 383 LT1...
Okay this is a race that happened a couple years ago, but it is my first kill story I have posted (and one of my better race stories)
Sorry if its long. If you want the short version, skip ahead to where it says "This is where it gets interesting..."
My buddy has had his 5.0 Fox Body Mustang for about the same amount of time I have had my Z. We both bought our cars pretty much stock. Since, we have always gone at it back and forth, racing, and then adding mods. The first big loss my Z took was when I had bolt ons, and he newly added a powerdyne supercharger to his stang. At a kick at that point I would hang for about a second before he would run easily away from me. Eventually I got fed up, so I saved up to get my 383. I got it put together and instantly I had problems figuring out why it was running bad. This was right before I joined the Air Force. I ended up going to boot camp while my poor Z was down. While away, another Camaro buddy decided to help me out while I was gone. He ended up fixing my car, and getting it running properly finally. It finally dyno'd at 420 RWHP, and my Mustang friend was at 445 RWHP in his 5.slow. The first chance I had to come home on leave was actually for my wedding. My Mustang friend was in the wedding party, and we both drove our cars to the rehersal dinner the night before my wedding. After the dinner my friends and I went for a drive (the other friends were in my buddies Supra, and Honda S2000)
This is where it gets interesting...
The race was inevitable between my friend and I. We ended up on the interstate and did a few rolls at 50-60 but we didn't have enough road to really see. We eventually got to a construction zone where there was no current traffic we slowed to 45 and nailed it. The 383 pulled him pretty good at the kick gaining me about a car and a half, then about 95 or so he started catching up, and then about 115 we were about even. At 125 I looked in my rear view mirror, and to my horror I saw a cop car trying to catch up
! He lit us both up right then and there. All 4 cars pulled over but the Supra and Honda buddy's were told to leave. I pleaded with him that I was on leave from the Air Force and that I was getting married the next day as he angrily took our keys from us. As he was running in between our cars to yell at us individually, traffic in the construction zone was thick since there was no actual place to pull over and we were still in the road. I'm not sure if it was because of this reason or that he had pity on my timing to race, but he told us to get the hell out of there and go play around somewhere else, and let us off with a verbal warning
.
The race was close, but neither of us really cared much at that point. We were just happy to not be going to jail (and me not fearing explaining to my future wife why I would be in jail and not at the church for our wedding, not to mention explaining jail time to my commanding officer back at base)
.

Nope, no video
. You are correct about the workers, this was in the evening when there were no workers (I street race, but choose to put only myself and the other racer at risk).
Mustangs are my favorite to beat down

CamaroRacing12 is fairly correct in his bet. I was more or less thinking as soon as I saw the cop, how I was going to explain to my future wife, and everyone else who had flown and drove to see the wedding, why I was in jail and not at the ceremony. God was definatly on my side that evening.
Well, I don't have any video of that night, but I do have video of how my car was set up at the time. In this clip, it shows how my car was at the time of the race (and right before I yanked the motor for the blower setup). Enjoy!
