Raced a 5.0 the other night

Well I was driving around my town last night and notice headlights familiar headlights behind me. To cut it short, I get in the turn lane to get on our parkway, and get side by side and run from around 40 MPH. I beat him, but he hung right next to me till about 100MPH by which time I had probably a car on him. Definately more than I expected from a 5.0. Can anyone guess what mods he had to hang with me like this. I've never had a 5.0 hang with me like that. I know for sure he is manual and has a cutouts.

He could be running any setup, its usually either hit or miss w/ those things..Either there fast or ragged and slow

I just kinda wanted an idea. I plan on asking him this weekend, and see if he tells me the truth (if he tells me). I might run him from a stop too.

I bet he had 3.73's or 3.55's, full exhaust, and maybe a CAI, 65mm TB, and or maybe one other thing. Those cars are light enough to run well with bolt ons and gears. But I also wouldn't be surprised if he had stock 3.08's and most of the bolt ons. I've heard of people squeezing a 13.9 out of stripper LX's bone stock. The fastest published GT from a magazine I know of is a 14.3. http://www.gtasourcepage.com/88SuperStockDragTest.html

Was it a Fox-body or a SN95? A fox body 5.0 wouldn't need much at all to run with an LT1. Mine went 14.2@98 bone stock.

about two months ago I ran a clean red 5.0 on the highway. We ran it from about 85ish (my a4 dead spot) and we were dead even at 100 (him getting the jump) but by 140ish he was way back there.

13.9 here with just a o/r h-pipe. We have plenty of low and mid range grunt...but when the speeds increase...our lack of h/p really shows. 3.73's seemed to help out with the top end a bit, atleast from a roll. Not having a 6th gear though makes it pretty tough to hang though...seeing as I top out around 118 in 4th gear, and 5th is a pig.

A guy I know has a 90GT who ran a 8.8 in the 1/8 with shorties, gutted cats, flowmasters, K@N with silencer removed, and 1.7rr's all on the stock 2.73's. Last year he put in a B303 cam on the 195k motor which had never been apart, 3.27's and Tremec 3550, and clocked off a 8.3 @ 83mph still on stock injectors and no tuning. Porting the stock heads with that cam, and he ran a 7.9 @86 with over 200k on the clock. The cam runs were on nittos too and 6k shiftpoints. Now he's about to pull the motor and build a stroker.

He has a fox body, I think around a '93 (don't quote me on that). But once the speed got up there I started to walk off. More than I expected though. He's a lot better of a driver now too. When he first got the car he had to replace an almost brand new clutch within a month . With any luck I'll see him tonight and I can ask him about it. It's supposed to rain around here, but if it doesn't I'll try to get him to run from a stop. Then we'll see if he can drive .

5.0's are so hard to guess what mods/ speeds they are running from it's looks. i raced a really nicely kept 88 or 89 5.0 convertible with cobra r rims and a helathy sounding exhaust once and killed it very badly. BUT I've also raced a 5.0 that was just the standard GT. no ground effects or anything, and with 15x7" stock rims. we were ever, and later to find out that lil white crappy looking 5.0 was packed with a supercharger and heads/cam. crazy stuff.

A heads/cam/supercharged 5.0 should be at or over 500rwhp. You must have one hell of a car.

Hey, not to rag on your or anything, but ALL fox-body GT's had ground effects. The GT only came in hatchback form, all others would be LX, no matter if it's a 4-cylinder or a 5.0.

Hes prolly talking about a LX with GT badges

My car looks stock, and bairly has any idle lope. H/C/I and a bottle. Ive suprised a few people with my car.

And ya its hit or miss. One day youll run a 5.0 and itll be a 16 sec car and youll walk him horribly. Next day you might run into a car that looks the same as the 16 sec one. But it runs 10s.

Sleepers if dont right. People dont expect them to be fast with a stock hood(some intakes make ya get a monster coul). I know a guy why has a dart blocked 427 windsor stroker. In a car that looks 100% stock. and it has a verry nice idle. You would think it was a 302 with mufflers till he hit the loud pedal.
