My 96 z vert against buddies sts 95 z vert

This wasn't really a planned race. Just got together at a car show and then decided to play a bit for fun. Normally I would have my tazzo or he would have his new g tech and that would make it much easier to know when a quarter mile is up but like I said this was just for fun. Never run his turbo car before.
Some background ,the sts is stock except for the turbo. It is set at lowest boost that it can be set at 5 or so psi. Also tuning buddy limited it to 5000rpm
right now as his stock injectors don't seem to want to keep up even at this low boost level. The car has had forged pistons installed which drop compression think a point and no other engine work done. For scanning he has lt1 scanmaster and was running 92 octane gashohol.

My vert has for mods list..tb bypass, hypertech tuning out,maf translator,30 pound injectors,g2 induction, holley filter, airfoil, magnaflow catback, asp underdrive balancer. Flo pro race bullet in intermediate pipe. Vig 2800,3.42 gears, spohn adjustable torque arm and lower control arms and panhard, bmr relocation brackets, hotchkis stb and lowering springs.Kyb agx set 4 back and 3 front.Nitto 275 /40R /17 drag radials brand new. He was running sumito something but big tires he has 17 by 11 rims. I was on 91 octane/92 blend.

My nittos were at 24psi and didn't heat them up to race him. I wanted to more test the cars and not use my traction advantage against him this time as we had no timing devices anyway.I was at full tank and about 60 or so pounds heavier than the other driver and have heavier crome rims and subframes and few other things so my car is likely about 100 heavier than his as well.

First run was off a light..I got the jump by three cars mabye and then he spooled up and pulled easily ahead and we backed that one off at around 80mph he was ahead but not huge ahead think 5 or so cars.

Next we did a roll on from about 50mph to about 100mph and again I got slight jump maybe a car or two and then he caught up and flew by .

Last match was off the line..nittos helped even at 24psi and even not heated but think my stall and gears are a bit much for them cold and did get some spin. I still easily pulled three or four cars off the bat and he again spooled up and flew by no problem and would say at around the 100mph mark he was again ahead by 5 or so cars. Not a dirty beating but as said he is limited to 5000rpm and at minimum boost with zero other mods. oh he does have high flow cat..forgot that. No idea if he was full tank like me and he had window on drivers side down ,we both had tops up. I dont' even know if he took off his traction control and he has no stall which I think really hurts. I didn't stall up my car and don't think he did his .As I said the nittos at 24psi unheated don't hook with my mods very well .It was hot today in the 70s maybe low 80s. Nice weather. He has no intercooler and no meth injection basic sts kit.

Anyway it was fun and next time likely will take timing toys so can give quartermile and 60fts and next time maybe I will heat my nittos and air them down and run 1/4 tank and try a few things. I also have some equalizer mods
waiting for install ,cc 305 and 1.6 rockers which likely will wait to install next spring with planned mac headers and LE2 heads. I also have zex wet kit that should be on shortly. I felt today that with some headers think would have been even and with my spray likely would have been faster.
He can easily go to 8 psi as soon as he gets some planned 42 injectors and
then can also bump his rev limiter back to normal.
So a few questions..why are my new nittos spinning so bad with my mild mods..well do have the 2800 vig and 3.42 gears but no real power mods.
Do I need to air them down and heat them up even on the highway?
Will they get a bit stickier as get a few miles on them I have maybe 50 miles on them now they are literally brand spanking new.
Also how much hp is he losing by only going to 5000 now.? It just sort of seems like he has maybe 400 to 425 engine hp tops now.I guess I have maybe 325 engine .
I have to say that the sts seems to work pretty good,it sounds awesome when it spools up beside it and looks cool . As to how it really works I think it might be best for highway racing type stuff and not so good for drag but maybe with a good stalll it would be a different story. I don't think he was spinning much ,if anything bogging I think until it spooled up but then it sure made up the ground fast.!!

We will have more matches..possibly one on spray in the 96z this season
and likely when 96 is done next season and in my other toys if they are ready.
97 talon is apart getting big forged 2.4 engine and huge turbo and contemplating single or twin on the 99 trans am and started to move the mods in that direction. Selling my 80 ta..too many projects.

Anyway for guys that say the sts don't work they do work and will make quick work of a near stock lt1 for sure. My 99 is down and out waiting on new clutch but might try it next ,it should be around 400 engine or so.

Nice death...STS kits are nice! H/C and a good hook, and it may be a different story (as long as he stays relatively low on boost)

I would love to put an STS on my car and keep it at like 5-6 psi with some massive injectors... oh the speeding tickets...
