LT1 Vs WRX
LT1 Vs WRX
well last night i was sittin at a stop light and this guy in a blue 04 or so WRX pulls up behind me. He starts randomly revin showng off his blow off valve, I got a borla so i did a few and it shut him up. But anyhow he lined up with me on the high way at like 70 "had to beat traffic" and we raced up to 120. We were DEAD EVEN up till then and we both broke off. did it again, same result.
then we went from 55. and this time to my suprise i started to pull, and i just kept on pulling and put like 3 cars on him up to 100, Not sure if my gears like going from a lower role but it seemed to work.
The owner was cool though, all he had done was a exaust. As well do I .
I drive a 96 Trans am heavy *** CONV A4 with 130k miles. im still impressed that our 10 year old LT1s with over 100x miles can still pull on all these new sports cars that are comin out. If it was a STI though i would of been toast

Re: LT1 Vs WRX
ya well i had a FULL tank of gas and a passanger. so maby thats why i was movin kinda slow. ive pulled my friend surge's WRX witch is actully modded. and this guy put up a better fight. so i bet he has more done to it then he is saying. he said he only had a exaust, but i think he is lieing . lol
Re: LT1 Vs WRX
He probably had some ECU tuning as well. A few extra psi of boost, more timing, tweaked fueling map, and stuff like that.
The stock WRX traps maybe 92 mph where at your worst you'd be 98-100 (allowing for age, convertible, automatic, etc.) He'd need more than an exhaust to pull out another 50 - 60hp.
For 2006 the standard WRX gets the 2.5 liter engine, a la STi, but with a smaller turbo and other things to keep its horsepower down. It's quite easy to restore that power though, so the 06+ models will be a much better bang for the buck.

Re: LT1 Vs WRX
the pull from 55mph might also have to do with where he was in his rpm range...depending if he was right in boost or had to build it. In that case thats way some lenghts were put on him...my guess.
I kno my friend has a 02 lil rexy and that thing skoots...13.1 at 101. And all he has done is cat-back and downpipe....along with a little boost
But Absolutly stock everything else

Re: LT1 Vs WRX
Considering that it added 7-8 mph to the car's stock traps, I'd call that excellent results for just an exhaust upgrade.
Re: LT1 Vs WRX
hahaha! Thank you John....i think his vision was a little cloudy when i said only CAT BACK AND DOWNPIPE. I dont think shavin' almost a second off of your e/t is tooo bad huh?
And its a FANTISCO car to race w/ too...no body ever suspects that it could be a 13.1 car.
On another note...if his front tires wouldnt smoke for say the first 25-30ft. Im just guessing it would be a 12.niner all day long at around 102ish
But hey i dont know anything bout cars or racing..so i should stick to thinking two pieces of pipe make up alot of mods.

Re: LT1 Vs WRX
along with a little boost ~ Which, to trap at 100-101, is pretty much maxing out on the stock turbos.
To be at the point, where I either A) Need bigger turboes, or B) Need N20, to go ANY faster, and only be a 100 mph car, is not good. Their AWD so straightline your not gaining dick from suspension work even, and its maxing the turbos. Thats why you odnt see many WRX's in any further than 13's ...

Re: LT1 Vs WRX
Why do you consider upgrading the turbo such a bad thing? It's not hard - maybe 3 hours if you've never done one before. It's not expensive; $600 gives you a turbo with great response, low 12-sec timeslips, and traps of 110-112 mph. At that point you're trapping 20 mph over stock with under $2k invested including fuel upgrades.
I admit that I would not have bought a Subaru with the 2.0 liter. I needed at least the 2.5 to have the kind of power delivery I like. So far I'm pretty happy with my family sedan. I'm in the middle of upgrading the exhaust (keeping the stock muffler section) and tweaking the ECU myself with open source software. I'm going to a track day in early November and will be hoping for 13.0s or maybe even a 12.9 if I can get a decent 60ft on the stock crap tires.
Another reason for the number of WRXs stuck in the 13s is the tuning monopoly they have going on with their vendors. One or two companies have them locked up for $800+ for the hardware, plus $200+ for every tune made after that. Or, you can plop down $1k and be able to tune your own car. The open-source movement makes it possible to do it now for the cost of a $90 cable. Once people start to trust these freely-available images, you'll see cars getting quicker. If they get over their brainwashing and their "if it costs money it must be better" mentality, they'll rival DSM owners as kings of cheapskate speed

Re: LT1 Vs WRX
How would a full bolt on/geared 6 speed lt1 fair against an STI? One of the kids I know wrecked his srt4(which I beat) and now has an 06 STI and hes already talking all sorts of smack lol
Re: LT1 Vs WRX
Im not agaisnt upgrading the turboes ... But I could care less what a car 1/4 miles in. I care about how fast it feels and after that big jolt off the line, a stock/near stock WRX isnt much.
Re: LT1 Vs WRX
Stock it's a 104-105 mph car, meaning it'd be pretty close from a roll. From a stop you can pretty much count on 13.10-13.20s which means you're gonna need a better 60ft to keep up with it.

I'll give you that 100%. I outran a stock WRX from 40-100 by maybe 1-1.5 cars .... in my old Grand Marquis! To be fair, it did have a K&N and Superchips programmer.
100 mph cars feel slow to me now. My Legacy is adequate but far from exciting, unless I've been driving my truck for a while.

I trapped 103 before I did my headers/1.6 rockers/gears so from what you said I could keep up or take one(barely) from a roll, but I might need a tire to keep up from a dig, sweet
I think I got one of the freaks though... I assrape stage 2 srt 4s and lid/catback ls1s
