LT1 vs. SL500
LT1 vs. SL500
my friends got a 2004 Mercedez SL 500 (not the AMG). I'm pretty sure its got a 5 liter v8 and its a convertible and auto transmission. Do you guys think I could take it in the 1/4 with the car in my sig?
Like most German cars, it's a tank: over 4000lbs.

There are a lot of AMG models. If you see the badge it means there's something mean under the hood.
For example, the 2004 E55 AMG looks like just another sedan but packs a 550hp supercharged v8. Later years use a naturally aspirated v8 but give me forced induction any day.
There's an AMG coupe with a twin turbo v12 that makesover 600 hp and is artificially limited to around 700 torque to preserve the transmission. It'll also set you back $130k+

1994 and 2004 SL500's have nothing in common except that they both say SL500 on the trunk lid and are made by Mercedes-Benz. A 1994 SL is a 129 chassis with a 119 engine (dual overhead cam V-8 with variable intake valve timing). 129 chassis has a removable hard top with a folding soft top. Body is different, Suspension is different, etc. A 2004 SL is a 230 chassis with a 113 engine (single overhead cam, 3-valve, dual spark plugs, no variable valve timing) 230 chassis has a retractable hardtop, active suspension, electronic braking, etc. VERY DIFFERENT vehicles.
My point was it's the same 300ish horsepower, heavy (4100+ lb) convertible in 2004 that it was in 1994. They accomplish it in a different way but it's still the same result.
300 horsepower was a lot from 5 liters in 1994. Today it's being done by everyone else with much less displacement and fewer cylinders.
They're solid cruisers but far from racers in any stretch. I can't believe how cheap they are now, at least compared to the price new. You can get a 98 model with low miles for under $20k.

Yes, the newer SL500 with the 113 engines are rated at 302 HP. Actually all the newer vehicles labeled XX500 have the same engine with 302 HP. This is the same basic engine as the AMG 5.4 liter (E55, SL55, etc) minus the supercharger and of course not the same internals. They are no longer making this engine except for a few models (the G class only I think.) The new V-6/V-8 engine family has dual overhead cams/4 valves. So if you see a new SL550, it is quite a bit faster than the previous year SL500. The new V-8 is 370'ish HP. The new AMG engine is the 6.3 liter 505 HP normally aspirated V-8 and for the first time shares no parts with the regular Mercedes engine. I actually prefer the supercharged engine for the low end grunt it has, but the new engine sounds nice at 7500 RPM's! Works nice with the 7-speed auto, really keeps the engine in the power band. I recently worked on an SL65, AMG of course, with a twin turbo V-12, over 600HP stock and over 700 LBS/FT stock. Customer was really cool and had time slips reading 11.4 ET at 130 MPH. You better be packing if you mess with one of those!
