Re: Killed a Rice car (Supra) I think.

I'm going to have to disagree with the original poster saying Supras are rice cars. Any aftermarket exhaust for them is going to have a large tip and a can right before it, that's just how it is. On the last generation, the exhaust tucked neatly under the floorpan so it doesn't look too bad in my opinion.

The reason these cars are some of the most hated on the road isn't because every one of them runs 10's and has 850 rwhp on a stock motor, but because that's what every riceboy nutswinger assumes. My buddy took his to the track one night and parked it. Visually the only mods you could see was exhaust, a front mount and some nice Volk wheels. We overheard a group of douche bags talking about that "thousand horsepower Supra" in the parking lot. Funny how it had that much horsepower since it was just BPU. I think they have a lot of potential, but most of the attention they get is undeserved. After helping work on them, fixing them when they break, riding in and driving them I can honestly say I think they are like any other car. They have their quirks, they have their strong points......

Don't forget - Supras started the big exhaust tip trend with their stock exhaust in 93. That was the first time it had been done and within 6 months everybody was going for that look.

People do need to realize not all exhausts that look like that are for appearance. My brother's had an HKS unit that was 3.75 inches the whole length and you could stick your arm through the muffler. It's safe to say it flowed pretty well.

Accually, when I went 10.8@127 with 480 rwhp it was at 3400lbs with full interior including stock seats, stereo, power windows door locks, and a stock steel hood. With a cam and converter swap it went 10.3@133 on slicks and 10.5@134 on P275 BFG Dr's. Then with a little more boost it went 10.0 on slicks. Still at 3400 lbs and with only 3.55 gears.
heres some pics of the car to see for yourself.

127 mph on at 3400 lb car with only 480 rwhp doesnt add up.

That doesnt sound far off, my buddy was trapping 121-122 with 420-430rwhp in a Z28 about the same weight

That statement you made goes with my original post in this topic. It seems that alot of Supra's seem to need 600+ rwhp to run those kind of numbers.I'm not saying all but alot of the high hp Supras dont have that good of quater mile times considering they have power they supposedly have.

But I dynoed the car 2 days after running those numbers. There was a typo on my last post. I accually went as quick as 10.6 not 10.8.And 127 was my best mph but most of my runs with that setup were 125-126 though.

Peaky power/tq curve + sh!tty traction = bad traps. It's amazing what a great powerband will do for a car in the 1320. My 440 rwhp Vette ran as fast as 12.2@122 whereas my 443 rwhp Supra never did better than 13.0@116. Too bad the vette fell apart once it hit 80k miles....where a Supra is just getting broken in

Btw, 2 tyte from HI....I know I've seen your screen name before....were you on the MKIV list when I was there between 98-01?

I don't care how big of an exhaust Supra's have on them, they still sound SICK!!! I may not like the look, but the sound makes up for it. To the guy who started this post, are you sure that it was a Supra that you ran into?? I'm not trying to call BS or anything but before I actually knew what a supra was I mistook it for a Celica. Now I can spot a Supra rear from anywhere. The Supra is one of my all time favorite cars and I would love to own one before I die.

Still got the Supra I see. Cool. I remember you used to have pics w/your sig....very sharp. Silver, right?

Btw, the Mkiv list didn't start until Dec. 97. I signed up in early 98.

I agree.

It is very improbable that a 3400 pound car can pull 127 mph traps with only 480 rwhp; even with a better low end power band it is still improbable.

The 2006 ZO6 Corvette, weighing in at 3130 pounds, runs 125-127 traps with around 445 rwhp; and that is with less drive train loss and a much better C/D.

It will take around 545 rwhp for a 3400 pound car to pull a 127 mph trap speed figuring in 18% drive train loss; more power will be needed with a driver and some gas in the car...

Figure it out for yourself.

Sounds more like a driver problem than an engineering problem. I ran a 12.4 in my six speed Supra when it was BPU and it only took me a 113 mph trap to do so.
