Here's one for you... '94 Z28 vrs 2001 BMW M3 !
Friend of mine picked up a teal BMW M3... And they are everything you've ever read about them and more. Turns on a dime and GIVES YOU CHANGE. It's pretty light, (~3400 pounds) has all kinds of technology put into it, and puts out ~280-290 rwhp stock, all out of an Inline 6. And I got to race it.
From a dig, I got my *** handed to me. That M3 has a differential on it worth pure gold. From a dead stop, it will fully lock and act like a locker, until the computer realizes you have traction again it unlocks and becomes the open differential/posi/whatever the hell it was before. Seeing as how that M3 only puts out 260 TQ, it didn't have a whole lot to work with to break the 255's on the back of it loose. So it pulled 5 cars on me by the time I could get my Camaro to hook somewhere in the middle of 2nd gear. This happened twice in a row.
*I have to say that I'm running mostly bald 245 V-rated Street tires, and it has ALOT to do with me not hooking worth a damn*
From a roll however, it was a slightly different story. I picked a 25 mph roll, about 3k RPM in 1st gear for me and 5k RPM for him. On the 3rd honk we went, and I instantly pulled a half car lead on him, still breaking loose and getting slightly crooked, having to slightly let off and shift to 2nd a bit early. This caused him to regain the half car, and put a half car on me. After the shift to 2nd and the car is on track again, we pull about even. However, I made the mistake of leaving it in 2nd, so as I bounced off the revlimiter and tried to shift to 3rd, he pulled a half car on me again, but him hearing me bounce off the limiter caused him to miss 3rd
so we shut it down after that.
It was the closest race I've had, and I honestly believe that even from a higher RPM roll, like 4500RPM in 1st, I think he would have edged me out on the topend. He's a VERY good driver. He has owned 4-5 Mustangs, from an '88 Saleen to a 2001 Supercharged Cobra. All of them were manuals, so its nothing new to him. I think the tides will change once the new 17x9.5 rims and BFG KD 275's come in. I think I'll hook ALOT better, allowing me to use most of my power and maybe keep my lead on him, instead of trading between shifts. We're going to run them again from a roll in the near future, this time from a higher starting point (4,000 - 4,500 RPM instead of 3k) I think it will be super close.
It was alot of fun, thanks for reading.

Sounds like a fun time. I raced an early-mid 90's M3, he got a jump on me & it was dead even the first time. Second time I got a great launch & he missed 2nd.

The next time we go from a roll it should be alot closer. It is nice to know that my 7k LT1 can hang with it in a straight line. But when I think about how effiecient that inline-6 is compared to my LT1, it makes me sick lol.
