Help! Got trampled!
So I race this 2004 Mustang GT the other day from a 40 roll and also from a dead stop at a light. By the time I get into third, the Mustang has 2 cars on me. I ask the pony driver about the mods and he states that he has only bolt ons. His car appeared totally stock from the outside and didn't sound all that different from stock either. Should this be happening? I was under the assumption that these cars were a bit slow? Maybe my car isn't as fast as it should be? I have $500 to spare so my question is what can I do to make my car faster with these limited funds? Thanks.

I would consider gears under the bolt on category. Also, chances were that he was a 5 speed and you raced his race. Your A4 would fare much better from a dig than highway 40mph punches.
The 99-04 GT is not slow by any means as it is quite comparable to the LT1 in performance.
I had an 01 GT that only had 900 miles on the odometer and we took it to Darlington International Speedway in SC and it run a 13.93 @ 99 mph. This of course was a 5 speed and prime conditions.
To be very honest about how you should spend your money, I would say... save up for a stall.

I won't run my stock converter A4 from a roll anywhere outside of 1st gear, it's a waste of time. Get a stall converter and you will have that neck snapping hit from a roll and your dig launches will be savage.

When I had my Z28 I was a die-hard GM fan, I hated Mustangs actually . I raced a friend of the wifes and he beat me for 100 dollars and I blew my engine at the top of 3rd. I was an A4 too but I raced from a dig. That race alone changed my opinion on the Mustang.
My car with minor bolt-ons is running 13.61@101.44 with no traction of the line, 2.0 60ft. I was able to get a 60ft down to 1.87 but I botched the 2-3 shift and ran a 13.93.
I have only a plenum, exhaust(stock manifolds), 4.30s, and pullies.
There are quite a few people who have gotten bolt-on 2vs into the 13.1-13.3 range. I am hoping by the end of the year I will be there too. If not I have the nitrous setup for an easy 12, maybe 11.
But anyway you look at it you cannot win them all. I have seen very fast cars on both sides and one day you have to be the slower car.
Good race and keep you head up.

I agree with Al on this. When I had my 3200 TCI installed in my 97 LT1 TA, it was night and day difference even from a roll punch.
That converter was so mean it actually picked me up .5 in the
1/8th mile alone. I think the PI vig converters are around a grand, but worth their weight in gold.
