GTP -vs- Silverado SS

My boss bought a Blue Silverado SS today and brought it by work for everyone to see. It's not a bad looking truck. Interior is alot nicer then i thought. He said he test drove a Lightning and it was just to Raw for him. Anyway... While we are looking at the truck another guy we work with said he thinks his car could take it. He has a 98 Grand Prix GTP. So he asked my Boss if he wanted to race and he said he wants to "Brake it in" first. So they are no dout going to race. I'm just wondering who i should bet on. I have raced a GTP and had my *** handed to me so i know they can move pretty good. But with 370+ ft-lb and 345hp with AWD i would think the SS would take him? What do you guys think?

Yup, the GTP should walk away...

My wifes 2001 4-door GTP ran 14.7's bone stock in the middle of the summer here in Florida. After adding a 3.6" pulley and a Home Depot CAI, it ran 13.9's in cooler weather. They're impressive family cars...

Probably the GTP. I raced one on the highway yesterday morning. Couldn't really tell whether or not it was stock but it sure was fast from a roll. My car runs low 13's and he was hanging with me the whole time. We raced twice from about 65 - 70 mph and I had no more than half a car length on him both times. You gotta remember his car weighs a lot less than your truck. Just my 2 cents.

how much do these new SS trucks weigh?

If it is around 4k lbs then I think the race might not go as you all think !
Don't forget the torque factor and AWD.

Let us know when the race happens !!

later....

actually, the gtp should easily win, considering the silverado ss has specs of...

0-60 = 6.6
1/4 = 14.99 @ 89.05
Curb weight = 5300

this is from motor trend's test drive for the 2003. despite making 345hp/380ftlbs and having the advantage of awd, the truck weighs too much to have a chance against a gtp. It could still beat lesser modified econo cars.

I've seen plenty of stock GTP's run low to mid 14's at the track. With a couple mods and some tweaks those cars will easily run 13's. A 15 second GTP sounds too high for the quarter.

whoops, you're right. guess I assumed the gtp would have some mods by now, especially if the driver raised his hand to race.

There are two factors I can think of why the GTP was hanging with me. One factor is my car has been runnin' like crap the past week or so. I think my IAC is all messed and I notice my car doesn't pull as hard as usual. My car starts to surge/buck a little when coming to a stop and WOT. I'm having trouble holding a steady idle and sometimes my car wants to stall out and die. The other factor is the guy had some mods done to his car and probably would of beat me if the race had gone on a little longer. Either way I still think the GTP's are pretty quick for a 4-door sedan. Just something to think about. Later.

Trust me they are, I was quite surprised to see the 14.7's my wife's car was pulling off in the summer heat. Gave me a newfound respect for the family truckster. And the best part is, for less than $200 in mods it now runs high 13's.

I seriously doubt that! if the race went any longer...you would have just gained more and more on him...on a stock GTP the speed limiter is set a t 128....and they pull extremely slow at top speed...around 80+mph. Now if you raced this guy heads up from a stop...sounds like he would have handed you your *** if he stayed w/ ya up top. FYI, GTP's down low power, instint torque...as we have to build ours through rpm's, but up top they dont have much on us...that is if they arent modded interally

my 2 cents

GTP's are for real! I raced one back in the summer that ran a 14.1 with just a cold air and a iced SC. Also got creamed by one running a 12.3.
