99 Trans Am vs. 96 Cobra (w/Video)

Just came back from a few runs between two of my homies,i must say they were real tite close races. Here are the cars:

1996 Cobra-4.10's, Cut-outs, pullies and air filter
vs.
1999 Trans Am-Pro 5.0 shifter,cut-out/cat back and air lid and k&n.

I wont go into extreme detail, ill just say that the runs were all extremely close from a roll and a stop with the LS1 inching ever so sloowwwly (maybe 1/3-1/2 of a car to 130ish). They ran about 6-7 times with each driver winnin their fair share.i was in the Trans Am and my bro in the Mustang (we were passengers) Pretty much dead even though,it was fun watchin two cars so closely matched. Now time for REAL mods eh?

P.S we got it on video,Ill try to post it up soon. Be safe and dont race in crowded areas,Till Next Time!!!

oh yeah owner of the LS1 is RedBeast93Z-good kill

Good Kill. I would expect the LS1 to pull just a little bit more with those mods, but 4.10's, Cut-outs, pullies and air filter really wake the cobras up. I posted my 96 Cobra Kill on here just last week, it had alot different results. Can't wait to watch the video.

heres the video: one of them from a roll the other from a stop.On the one from a stop the Cobras clutched slipped a bit on the 1-2 shift. These are only 15 second. 350 kilobyte videos so even modem guys can download them easy.

WARNING: Not the best quality,i recorded off the TV with my video camera phone.

Good Runs, gears help a cobra bigtime, funny thing is 410's is actually undergeared for the dohc

yeah, some people seem to think 4.10's mean you have racing gears LOL. 4.10's in a Cobra is the equivalent to 3.23's in an LT1 or about 3.42 in an LS1 (stock cams). So although "4.10's" sound cool or like a big mod,its barely acceptable in terms of performance in a high revving DOHC 4.6.

But it is a great improvement still over stock gearing.

no doubt about it the 4.10's made an improvement but more than anything it just levels the playin field (its an obvious disadvantage the Cobra comes with) . Some people seem to think the 96-01 Cobras are slow but a big reason for this is their stock horrible rear end gear ratios. Anyways it was good racin on both drivers.

Steve Y, what kind of tires were they runnin? i think the reasoning behind this would either be they werent using good enough tires to provide the bite or the track wasnt up to par. From my experience,it seems gears effect the launch the most, even then though,i cant see them helping TOO much on street tires, uless the track was properly prepped.

I am trying steve lol, its been a logn process, first i need a 3 series carrier, got that, then i needed pinion bearings, and a pinion seal, got that, now i just need to wait till the shop can install them, they would have been intoday but the shop is moving across town, so i may have to wait till middle of next week. After that i am giving Bryan at pcmforless a visit and getting my car tuned. After all that i think i am done for mods for a little except maybe long tubes, but that coudl be awhile till funds return again.

difference MIGHT not be that much, ive found that for every 15% gear ratio difference,it equals out to about 1MPH gain, but tenths wise in the 1/4 im not 100% sure of but at least .1 per MPH gained. i still stick to my instincts and say with proper tires they are worth more.I too would like to see a test like that you have suggested,it would get rid of a lot of myths. But also,in order to be most accurate, the tests should be at the same track and preferably the same day in similar weather.

Not that much of an improvement for such a drastic gear change. Btw, 4.56s are supposedly the best drag racing gears for '96-'01 Cobras. I wonder what the difference would be with a stock Cobra and slicks vs. a 4.56 Cobra with slicks.
Some w/ 456's are now even going to 488's ....w/ those 456's and good traction id imagine it would put the cobra somewhere in the 13.0-13.2 range...There's a ton of guys on the corral runnin 13.0's or better in there 96-01's w/ nothing more then good gearing and some traction.
