97 ford pickup vs. new v6 rustang

Hey guys. I currently have two ford pickups, a 97 and a 65. I usually play w/the 65, it's modded a little (351w, flattops, milled heads, rv cam, shorties, true duals, edel. intake and carb, 4:11's). Well on this day, (it was about november i suppose) i was at a red light next to a red v6 rustang w/temp tags. It was a 99+ body style, I figured it was prob. new.

Right after the traffic light the two lanes merge into one. Well, I'm not a big rustang fan after a friend w/a 95 lt1 vert converted me to the camaro genre early in my youth (thank god).

So this rustang starts easing up a little, and then it revs. I'm like, hmm, things could get interesting. Keep in mind my truck has a stock 4.6 that isn't much. Factory rated 210 hp. and 290 ft. lbs., but it runs decent for a truck. I think factory claims the weight is right at 5500 lbs, has an eight foot bed, 3:55 limited slip rear.

I'm thinking that the rustang may take me, even though it's a v6 due to it's much lighter weight. So I look over at the driver, and it's some old grey-haired man. I'm like, yeah, this guy doesn't wanna race, he's just rolling up a bit.

Light turns green, and he starts spinning, tires squaling, I'm about to ease out of the light. At this point he's maybe a car length ahead, I jumped on it as soon as I heard his tires. My tires lose traction pitifully. It feels like I'm sitting still, so I let off for a sec to let it build momentum, jump back down on it. This point the rustang is about 3 lengths ahead. I pull pretty good on him through first and start to hit second. I'm about a fender ahead of his front bumper, and my auto truck is shifting.

All of the sudden I hear, bing, bling bing bing batta bing bing. Retard hit his rev limiter. LoL. Don't know if he was trying to manually shift an auto or if it was 5-speed. He dropped back about 5 or 6 lengths immediately. I was turning right at the next light and he came up behind me. I gave him a thumbs-up for effort; he just shrugged his shoulders. It looked like he felt pretty dumb, getting outran by a big heavy pickup in his new little mustang.

Oh well, hopefully I'll have an LS1 Z pretty soon, as soon as I start my new tugboat job in NY. Then I'll get to play w/the gt's a little too. Thought it was a funny kill. I didn't feel special about it or anything, but it feels good to put some of the rustang owners who think their cars are the fastest thing on the planet in their place.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of quick rustangs out there, I'm even a fan of some of the older ones, and when the driver knows what they are capable of that's cool. I bet that was the last time that old guy will try to race a pickup though.

You have a '97 F-150 w/4.6 that will spin the wheels? I tried it with my dads and can only spin them if I brake torque it. That's sad though, those trucks don't have much. Rustang driver must have felt bad . Good kill though, it's always fun to whup up on slow cars. You even beat him with a ford .

Yeah, it'll spin 'em pretty good, especially from a stop. Sometimes it barks just a hair on the 1-2 shift, but that's only like, once in a blue moon. I'm not sure if it's because of the forward weight bias or what, but in any kind of slick conditions it gets pretty hairy w/the limited slip, kinda fun to play around in. Can't wait until I can get a Z though.

I bet your truck runs 18's maybe?

Even the slowest 99+ v6 stangs which are autos run mid 16's.

You beat the driver, not the car.

I've never ran it at the track. I'd like to some time. It runs decent for a 5500lb truck, and I'm sure you're correct about poor driving on the other guy's side, I mean, he even hit the rev limiter, but he pulled a couple cars on me at first, and I was ahead of him by about a fender when he hit rev limiter, so I'm still proud. LoL. I didn't even expect to beat it, but at least I put the guy in his place. I know my truck isn't fast, I don't claim that it is, I know better. Wait till I get the Z though.

I figured his car was prob. faster, but that makes even better. It may have something to do also w/such a short race. It wasn't anywhere near 1/4 mile, he prob. would have pulled on me by then if he could figure out how to manuever a shifter. I only ran to about 45-50 mph.
