94z28 vs Evo (Soon to happen!) Roll or Dig?
Ok.. Theres this dude that wants to race me in his Evo.. Were gonna set it up but i do know he ran a 13.3 at the track.... and thats what everyone said he runs... Ok... I'll have midlength headers, and a dynotune, and ill be back on stock springs w/ bilsteins by the time i race him... He wants to race from a freeway roll.... but said its up to me to pick... He said my car has no topend and thinks he could gap me... He has no big mods from what i heard and seen.. just intake/exhaust.

Im not real sure. My friend has an EVO and it doesn't launch like you'd think it would being awd . He ran a GSX awd eclipse and got rocked until 3rd gear ( I was riding in the EVO) but it pulls REAL hard and doesn't feel like it stops. Impressive car to me....just my .2!! by the way he only has exhaust , and intake as well..

I've driven an Evo but never launched it or anything. I wonder if the 6spd they use makes them slower (than they otherwise could have been) because of the extra shifting at the beginning.
A well-ratio'ed 5spd means less shifting. The car makes enough power that it can pull any normal gears. Everybody who's raced knows shifts at the beginning take much more off your ET than shifts at higher speeds.
The gearbox in a Subaru STi is so short they often shift out of 1st before passing the timing lights!
AWD may not be ideal from a roll but it's not the handicap people make it out to be either. An AWD car that traps 110 will run basically even with a 2wd car that traps 110 from a roll.

OK. even though they are AWD they still trap @100 near stock. i dont care if it is 20 wheel drive, if it traps 100 in the QTR from a roll it is going to keep up with any other car that traps 100.
go from a 30 roll if u get to pick the race. 40 is there sweet spot adn 30 is to hi for 1st and he will have to start in the bottom of 2nd. you will be right at your peak TQ and pull best from there.
from a dig, i dont think u have a chance

Which leads me to my next question...are you people on crack suggesting that he race an AWD, short-geared car from a dig? Especially when he has 2.73's?

I'm not saying your problem is going to be hooking. You just have to keep in mind that these cars carry 4.52 gearing with an all-wheel-drive transmission.
If this guy knows how to drive at all, you're going to be starting off that race in a very ugly position from a dig. Furthermore, your tall gears will make that even uglier.
The best chances for a win will be to use your gears and top end as an advantage against the Evo. That means from a roll!

I think you have a pretty good shot from a roll, will really depend on his exact mods but you definitely need to take away his AWD advantage. Discounting the AWD the Evos wouldn't be particularly impressive IMO, with mods he may still may have enough for a bolt on LT1 auto but it would take a decent bit for him to "gap" you.

my friend has a 95 Z with intake, no cat, and gears. He raced a wrx with intake and exhaust and the subaru took him by about half a length and this was from a 40 roll so his gears didnt give him an advantage..maybe if it was from a lower roll but i no the wrx and evo are exactly like z28's and trans am's persay so you should take him if you drive good
