94 LT1 vs 03 Cobra

I live in the country, about a 12 mile drive on a 2 lane road to town. I've been driving the road for 10 years, so I feel I know it about as well as anybody. There was this chick that had an 03 Cobra...got it for a graduation gift (along with a ranch house). Well, she tired of the Cobra and got an 06 Z06 Vette (good choice IMHO) lol So, there's been some speculation as to exactly how this happened, but she either "gave" or "sold" the Cobra to her boyfriend. Her boyfriend use to have a newer style silver Mustang GT convertible, and I had a 95 Z28 A4...I use to blow his doors ALL THE TIME in that car.

Well, I was cruising home last night, around 2:00 AM. There was no traffic on the road, so I was driving around 70-80 MPH on the straights and hitting the turns pretty hard. I looked into my rear-view and saw headlights. First thought, "Oh, no! It's the 5-0!" I figure they already clocked me, so I was gonna continue to drive at the same speed until I was sure. Well, the lights got up to my bumper, and no blue lights, so all was cool. We hit 110 on a 1 mile straight and he was on my tail through the turns. Then we got behind a truck doing about 65. The guy in the truck saw what was taking place behind him, so he made room by pulling into the next parking lot up the road. As he was turning in, the stang passed me.

I grabbed a gear and the chase was on. For the next 3 miles, I was up his A$$. I could smell his brakes burning. I'll give it this is the hardest I've ever ran my car...believe it or not, stock 94 Z28 with a 6 speed, and I was barking 3rd. I was downshifting at high enough RPM's when we were coming into turns that the back tires chirped on the downshift. Coming out of the turns grabbing 3rd the back tires would spin. Anyway, I was extremely proud of my driving skills on this one. Every time we hit a straight he would pull *slightly* away from me and this was between my 2-3 shift. I wasn't even letting off the gas...held it to the floor and just kept grabbing gears from 2-3-4. I was down-shifting into 2nd at 40-50.

I continued to follow him past the road that turns to my house, and when I saw his turn signal near his girlfriend's ranch house, I put mine on. He pulled into the parking lot, and gunned it, so I did the same, followed him all the way to the garage door, and parked directly behind him. His chick got out the passenger side and came strutting back to the passenger side of my car and he did the same...like they were gonna whip somebody lol So my girl and I got out and I shook his hand, told him the car was pretty fast. Asked him what all was done to the car, and his girlfriend said "it's pushing around 390." I was like, "Damn that thing should run with your vette" and she was like, "they run pretty close."

Anyway I felt good, considering I'm driving a 94 with FACTORY PLUGS & WIRES and 112K miles. The bottom of the catalytic converter rusted, and 2 days ago the car started sounding like an old truck lol

How can this be?

no offense, but 3 scenarios

1- your bsing us,

2-he wasnt trying hard

3-he cant drive for sh*t

Well, things change when you throw corners into the equation ... my limited experience on a road course tells me this. I mean, between me and a little Honda Civic, I should roast them on the straights, but put corners in the way, and we can run pretty much the same lap times.

I don't know how well the '03/'04 Cobras actually handle with their IRS setup (considering they weigh ~3700 lbs) but I know that a 4th-gen can hold its own or actually surpass the average Mustang, in the handling department anyway. Now obviously the Cobra has the power behind it, and a better rear suspension, but then it comes down to the driver as well ... that's probably the biggest factor there.

And just for the record: a 390 HP Cobra should run NOWHERE NEAR the 505 HP '06 Z06!?!?!!? I don't care if the Cobra puts 390 to the WHEELS, it's still lacking ~60 - 70 RWHP, AND it's ~500 lbs heavier!!! They should be about as close as an LT1 to an LS6 Z06.

Good job running with the Cobra though ... obviously you can drive better than him .

myslowcamaro, I'm definitely not BS-ing. It happened and I was running the ***** off my car, but I also had a guide...his tail lights. I noticed his car seemed to be running better when he was behind me, so...I knew I could take the turns at least as fast as he could, and there were a lot of turns.

Here's a map of the road...it's FUN to drive.

Thanks for the props Capn Pete ;-) This 94 Z runs GREAT. I've owned 3 LT1 F-bodies and it's by far the fastest...and the best part - I bought it off of eBay for $2,325 - 6 speed with T-tops. Had to drive 300 miles, put on a water pump, opti, and a/c compressor (which I had laying around from a previous car) and that's all I've done to it, other than clean it up. It had been sitting for 4 years! lol It's insane. I bought it to fix and sell, but I'm hesitating now. I've put a little over 1,000 miles on the car and can sell it anytime I want for $4,000. It has a crack in the windshield, the door skin seperated from the shell and somebody half-a$$ JB Welded it back together, and it seperated again, there's a dent in the driver's side quarter panel...and the car needs buffed. I've got under $3,000 in it though...could be a mean project, or a quick $1,000. lol

like i said, no offense. its with very few posts that most of us get skeptical of a story like that. some noob wants to come in and try to impress the vetern owners, but even then you people with 1000's of post that do the same, just more likely with new people.

i dont race on corners, but i have to agree with capt pete, and also in the right conditions i guess a riding mower can beat a rocket car down the track which is why i said about he being a bad driver. anyway, no offense, good run.

Yeah I understand where you're coming from. I'm not a bs'er though lol I have a pretty good understanding of vehicles, and have owned over 60 in the past 5 years. I've had a couple junkers, but a lot of cars have supprised me. I had a 1973 Ford F-100 Ranger with a 289 HI-PO, 3 speed on the column, and it was VERY FAST. Nice looking truck too. I've had 3rd gen f-bodies, a 93 Eagle Vision TSi with the 3.5 DOHC that screamed...a 93 Bonneville SSE that was quick...a 97 Mitsu Galant that was quick. I've had countless Mitsu Eclipses and Eagle Talons...a 2003 Dodge Neon R/T...1989 Honda CRX Si, 1992 Honda Prelude Si that was VERY impressive, and I currently own a 2004 Dodge Stratus SXT coupe (rare), 1995 Eagle Talon TSi AWD turbo with some mods (rare "celery" green), 1991 Lotus Elan SE Turbo with some mods that is EXTREMELY FAST...designed while GM owned Lotus...has an Isuzu/Lotus 1.6L turbo(very rare...a little under 400 imported to the states), a 1996 Pontiac Firebird Formula with it's fair share of mods, and the stock 94 Z.

I'm not trying to brag...well, a little, but what I'm really getting at is that I have a passion for cars, and I'm not scared to admit when one actually impresses me. I don't hate on imports, 4 cylinders, 6 cylinders, fords, dodges, etc. There are a lot of fast cars out there. Some have different characteristics, but I've found that it comes down to 1.) The driver, 2.) Power to weight ratio 3.) Type of "track" or "road" conditions.

I will admit that my passion is for F-bodies, as my first car was a 1994 3.4 5 spd. I've since owned a 95 Z28, an 84 Z28, 85 Z28, 96 RS, 89 GTA, 96 Formula, and a 94 Z28...love the f-bodies, and always will.

I was just amazed at the performance of this bone stock 94 versus a supercharged car. Anyway, I think I could eat him up in the Lotus. haha, then again, maybe not.

thats 1 thing msot people on this site will bash.
Cars that have 100k+ price tags but lack the oh mighty 1/4 mile time but forget about their ahndeling capabilities and supporting areodynamics and such

It's a 1991 Lotus Elan SE Turbo (M100). It was around $40,000 new...they book between $12-23K now. It has a 1.6L (98 cu. in.) DOHC 16V Isuzu-Lotus engine boasting 162HP @6600 RPM and 148 lb. torque @4200 RPM. This doesn't sound like much, but the car only weighs in at 2249 lbs. It has a K&N intake, Blitz blow-off valve, uprated intercooler, and a cat-back exhaust system. With the "Everest" chip, the car can be taken to around 240 HP. It's a TINY car...front engine, front drive, 2 seater. Length - 152.4in; Width - 68.3in; Height 48.4in. I've never had it to the track, but stock they run a 6.7 sec 0-60 and a standing 1/4 mile time of 15.4. Not too bad considering this car gets 42 mpg on the highway. It's been lowered 2" and rolling on factory 16" wheels this thing sticks to the road like glue. It's a 5 speed, and if you run it through the gears without letting off the gas(keep the throttle OPEN while shifting), it will hold you to the seat.

I'm not sure if it would even give the Cobra a run, but it feels like it would. Feels like I could outrun an airplane lol. Never raced anything with it though. I've only had it out maybe 7-8 short trips.
