88 Vortec 350 S10 vs. 94 Formula - How Bad Would It Be?
88 Vortec 350 S10 vs. 94 Formula - How Bad Would It Be?
Alrite, so a buddy of mine has an '88 S10 regular cab, short bed, with a motor out of a 97-98 1500 truck with the factory vortec heads that were on it. He's .040 over, with a TH-350, some kind of stall (couldnt be but 2200 i'm guessing) and a shift kit that shifts pretty decent. He's got a Mallory 50kv distributor, Accel 8mm wires, some kind of AFPR running 5-6. He's been riding a 600cfm edelbrock carb, but claims he's recently switched to a 750 DP
I duno, I didn't notice any real difference when I rode in it this last time with this 750, but I was a bit chinesed at the time, so you'll have to excuse me.
So anyways, he's got a 10 bolt with an open 3.42, single-tire fire, but has some 15x10 slicks I think he said. Forgot to add, he's got an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake as well.
I'm just running with a bone stock '94 formula, 2.73 posi, nearly brand new 245/50/ZR16 BFGoodrich Comp T/A G-Force KDWS's, Moroso cai, 80 series flow, hi-flo cat, and a pretty damn nice shifting trans now
I'm confident that I will beat him, but I was just wandering how bad. He claims 13.70s@112mph with ****ty-*** 60' times.... ehh
What are ya'lls thoughts? Just curious

Although others may disagree, I think it's going to be closer than you think. Gonna be a driver's race.
I think he has weight and gearing on his side - with a major disadvantage in traction. I'll give you the slight edge on HP and a bigger advantage on traction (your gearing is not good though). If he keeps up with you through 1st gear, then you may lose. If you can get the jump, I think you'll keep it and win.
Just my $0.02 - good luck.

No way he's trapping 112 with that setup! I'd bet him money he can't trap over 111.

I know that the trucks only come with 250 hp or something... but i bet since it is rebuilt that he is running a higher comp ratio and a bigger cam. He probably just doent want to tell you.
Re: 88 Vortec 350 S10 vs. 94 Formula - How Bad Would It Be?
it may only produce 250hp but the key here is its in an s10 that should weigh in at 3200lbs,3.73 gears,i had an 87 s10 blazer with a 245hp 89 vette L98 with 3.42s it ran consistant 13.5@104 H.R.P. sea level....so his numbers will not be too far off of that!

i know both LT1WannaBe and the guy w/ the S10,both buddies of mine. i know for a fact that the S10 DOES NOT have a different cam in it,b/c hes running BONE STOCK factory heads,no upgraded springs or screw in studs...hes already blown one motor up putting in a cam w/ these stock heads.
Re: 88 Vortec 350 S10 vs. 94 Formula - How Bad Would It Be?
Alrite, let's look at something here for a minute. An LT1 base 94 Z28 weighs in at 3434lbs w/ power windows and locks, t-top optioned car. A 94 formula wont be far off. These cars run at about 14.1-14.2 in the quarter at around 99-98mph. An LS1 camaro I wouldn't think be but 50-75lb difference (if that?), and then run 13.5-13.7@105-103mph, with over 300 at the crank. An LS1 vette runs 13.1-13.4 at anywhere from 108-106mph, being generous. Last time I had checked, a regular C5, 6 speed, coupe car weighed a little over 3200lbs, I may be wrong
What I'm trying to get at, is that this S10 is weighing in at 3k or perhaps even 3100lbs, factoring in the added weight of the 350 cast iron heads and block and the TH trans. With his 98 vortec engine producing 255hp from the factory, the only HP mods he really has is the Performer RPM intake and the shorty headers. Those might gain him up to 270-275 on a good day. The 600 edelbrock is not going to do a damn thing over fuel injection, there's nothing to throw more fuel/air at because everything internal is factory spec.
This kid has already raced a 2004 cavalier 5 speed, w/ the ecotec 4cyl that has only a muffler on it. And he had probly 1/2-1 car on him in the 1/8th, if that, it wasn't much, with minimal taction problems. Here soon, I will let you guys know the result, I'm thinking it won't be too pretty for him. We'll see
