so im driving about forty on a main drag, some kid yanks up next to me in the 87 supra with a different turbo, blow off valve, and a bunch of stuff ive never heard of, we count off to 3, im immediatly a cool one car ahead, switch at 55 or so into 3rd, he cant hang worth a broke d*@k. im 3 cars by the end of 3rd, we pull over and he starts talking about running for 200 bucks, i pull the cash out (around 185 or so) hoping he will take the run, he replies with the classic" ive got this and this at home, its a short drive to there" well, i called his bluff on this one, i told him to go get his 13.2 second honda s2000 and ill go home and get the 2001 ss. both stock as hell, he declined saying that he had to go get his girlfriend who had just called him, so he will meet me sometime again. maybe i should carry more cash on me from now on, lose the first round.

 

i dunno about this one man. if he said he had all the mods he did then he didnt know how to drive. of course thats dependant upon him actually having those parts. even an mk3 with bolt ons and a modded CT26 (which is what they come with) will trap about 115mph with a good driver and tune.

i think you either raced the driver or his lack of mods because there is no one a good driver with those mods would lose to anything less than atleast a cammed ls1.

No clue what those *** cars gain from mods...any year, any model...My car interest spans probably no farther then mustangs, camaros, and now the GTO...sad but true

 

87camracer hit it, i owned 2 of these cars, and even with the stock turbo running up to fuel cut they're pretty snappy from a roll. i once ran my friend with a 97Z m6, he had loudmouth, slp cai, free mods, etc. with 60k miles. i had 87 supra with 126k miles. all i had was 3" dp and no cats to 3" exhaust, and shimmed the wastegate to 12psi. we ran from about 50-100 about 4 times. each time i'd be even through 3rd but his gearing beat me, i'd drop back on the **** ever so slightly and that'd be it. when i brake boosted it was a little more even, but he still had me.

upgrade the turbo (which is what he says he had), the fuel deliver, and a new AFM and it's not uncommon to see HIGH 300rwhp numbers. then again, who knows what he really had. either way good run

There was a guy with a Mark III (what you raced) Supra turbo around here. He had a downpipe, and some other bolt ons and drag radials. I saw him run a 9.0 @ 80 at the 1/8th track one night. That's not so fast for a turbo car in my opinion. But then there was another one I saw, a friend of a friend type thing. He had a bigger turbo, fuel system, supporting electronics, intercooler, exhaust, etc and he was just as fast if not faster than my Camaro on the interstate.

 

after i pulled over and talked to the kid, 16 yrs old i think, he said that he ran a best of 14.7 before the only upgrade(blow off valve). i didnt say that it was in prime condition now did i had massive miles on it, was dog slow. next time ill get the race on my cell, post it for ya. was a transplanted turbo from another supra also. the interior was really nice though, real clean. whether or not the kid can drive is really not my concern., i thought they went a tad faster than that stock, like around 14.3 or so. he said a best of 14.7

bov shouldn't do much... if anything for the time. upgraded turbo is good for low 13s with supporting bolt ons (full 3", no cats, intake, etc.). stock though, they are DOGS. my friend ran 13.9@103 with 2.5" catback, manual boost controller on the stock turbo... and 166k miles on the ticker. they're nice, but sadly it is becoming harder and harder to find one worthwhile

With production cars (the car in the aritcle was a prototype) and normal drivers they were good for low 15s. You've got to remember - 15.0 in 1987 was fast for a stock car. 6.8 psi will only push 3 liters so far.

A BOV is hardly a mod, and it does nothing towards going faster. It just gives a loud whoosh for the F&F crowd. 3 inch exhaust and more boost would be worthwhile mods, and would have put it into the 13s.

Being narrowminded about other cars is hardly a positive thing. I've never owned an F-body and I've been on this board a long time. It has long been the best place for info on all cars, not just GM and Ford. When I ask someone about their car at the track, I don't want to have to nod dumbly at whatever they say!

 

hold up now!!! i happen to have much respect for imports, my car before the z was a first gen talon, i was originally looking for a first gen awd talon before i was given the opportunity to buy my z28. ive owned 3 5.0 stangs, an 87 toyota sr5 pick-up(tried to kill it, i couldnt! would not stop going!)and my talon, i am very aware of the potential of a import, as i was toasted many a time by them. mainly rx-7 or supra's, as i am about to get my stuff handed to me very soon. friend bought a skyline, stuck in california till epa and dot approvals are done. it just didnt happen this time is all im saying. a properly built import, not a honda, will get the same enthusiasm from me as a built z06. i love cars, it doesnt matter what they are

 

and if i wasnt in a rush, i would have sat and talked to the kid till daybreak about his car! he was proud of his vehicle and what it is capable of, and he has many plans for it im sure!who knows, in a couple of months he might toast me like i was standing still
