Smile 3000GT VR4 gets hammered down in Glen Burnie.

I went down to GB last Friday to help a board member with some wood work he was doing on his house. When we finished up around 10pm it was time to go for a cruise to see what was going on. We only made it a couple of blocks on Ritchie Highway when we heard someone popping a BOV behind us. A late model VR4 with the high wing pulls up next to us and we play around a bit until we get some open space. We jumped from the top of second into third and I pulled a bit. We get to a light but he is stuck behind a car so after the green I jump ahead so he can pass the fart canned Honda that was blocking him. We end up going from about a 15mph roll (he jumped on it so I went, I thought he was looking for a run from a stop) to the top of 3rd with the cutout screaming and it was ugly. Afterward he pulled up next to us and with a funny look on his face he said a long drawn out "right". My passenger leaned out the window and yelled to him to hit the belt way so we could do a full run but the driver said his bottle was either empty or he didn't have it with him. (We couldn't understand what he said) He jammed on the brakes and dropped back.

We saw a few other cars but couldn't find anything other than a few rice encounters. After I dropped him off at his house and got back on Ritchey Hwy to head home I got behind a 1st gen Eclipse with exhaust. He started reving and then jumped off the light. I moved to the right lane and passed him at the top of second.

Good Kill i live 15 mins from ritchie highway. Be careful though that road is loaded with police trying to crackdown on the ton of street racing going on.

Yep, they busted a blue honda infront of us. I saw the light bar in the sillhouete of the car when he was way back. I slowed down and a group of rice infront of us decided to run from the light. He whipped around us and busted them. We went through the Mc D's parkinglot twice to see if we could find anyone. There was a white WS6 there.

There aren't any stock-turboed 3S cars that can run as quick as you do from a roll. Mine's as far as they go and all I could hope to do is keep up. The damn 01+ LS1's are just too fast.

There aren't any nitrous setups that work right on these cars so he was probably BSing you about the bottle. Some people have it but it just doesn't net results that are worth the expense and potential engine hazard.

His only hope would be new turbos, but with a minimum $1500 cost, it's a step that not many make.

Question

I was very surprised when he jumped from a roll. I was slowing down and figured he would go from a dig. He was young though. Maybe he doesn't know much about the F-bodies.

I did have a good instigator riding shotgun (1BadAzzGT).

Don't get mad Tim since I told everyone you rode in a Fbody.

Yes and you even had my heavy *** in the car! LOL. By the way, I have to admit that your LS1 is about the fastest (close to stock) I've been in. That damn thing pulls really nice.....

Take care,
Tim

Me an instigator? LOL... I think you had it handled very well by yourself.

Why would I be angry about the Fbody? Once upon a time I almost traded the GT for a 1999 T/A

Jess,

Nice kill. If you didn't already know, I totalled my 02 heads/cam WS6. Pics http://community.webshots.com/user/leatherneck0629 anyway, when I get out of this hole I'm going back home to strip the parts off so I can turn it over to the insurance company for a check. Let me know if you want anything off of it. Otherwise it's going to the junkyard.

Nick

Heres what it's got:

LS6 S2 heads, Comp Cams 224/224/581/581 cam, slp long tubes, B&B Triflo Exhaust, TSP Ported LS6, Comp Cams Hardened Push rods, Clear Lid/K&N, Leatherneck Ported Throttle Body, Ripper Shifter, Rollmaster Adjustable Double Roller Timing chain and sprokets, ETC....

Parts will go cheap. Cam and Heads have Less than 1K on them. I also have some other parts that never made it on the car before I wrecked it like an electronic cut out...

Damn Nick sorry to hear about the car... that sucks. Hope all is well.

That's like saying your Regal is too heavy to be fast. A few hundred pounds isn't hard to overcome. After all, I manage to do 12.50s on stock turbos (so small they're comical) and it weighs 4030-4070 lbs with me in it (280 lbs) They're slow because the stock turbos lose 5-6 psi at the top of each gear.

Once you lose the stock twins, 11s are easy. It seems not many people can drive them to the 11s though. There were 3-4 cars at our last event with traps 10-12+ mph more than mine but barely 2-3 tenths faster in ET.

No it's not. My Regal weighs 3,686 with me in it (~235lbs), 1/4 tank of gas and not one ounce of weight removed. That's about 3,450lbs. and is right about what T-types/Turbo-T's weight and about 100-150lbs. lighter than most GN's.

So your car is about 350lbs. heavier than my Regal. The stock turbos? It takes two turbos to go as fast as I did on my single, small, stock turbo with a set of 235/60-15 DR's and $400 worth of mods (fuel pump w/hotwire, adjustable wastegate, AFPR, chip, TC lockup switch, air box base lid, TB bypass). I went 12.6@106mph like that on pump gas...many times. There are guys who have gone faster (although quite a few slower).

I'd venture to say there are very few that go 11's or faster. Neat cars, but too heavy to be dangerous and the AWD never scared me when running them on the street. I used to cut 1.70's on my little DR's. I now run ET Streets on the Regal.
I'm sure the VR4/3000's would outhandle my Regal, but they aren't 1/4 mile monsters.

Your "small" stock turbo almost certainly has more flow than my certifiably-dinky stock turbos combined (275 cfm each). My car has two turbos because it's a transverse-mounted V engine; there isn't room for a single. I'd love a single upgrade point rather than two.

I have basicaly the same mods you do - a $20 boost controller, rewired stock fuel pump, a downpipe, stock catback, and bigger injectors. 12.50s @ 109 and they (the 3S owners) said it couldn't be done. The fact that my heavier car with a smaller engine and less turbo can do the same as your Regal, which already has almost 20 years of proven track ability, shows that the 3S platform isn't all junk.

The main reason you don't see many fast 3S's is because of vendor pricing. There have been only 2-3 vendors that ever made parts, and even small upgrades were stupidly expensive. A small set of bolt-on turbo upgrades starts at $1500 (360 cfm each) and $2200 (435 cfm each). My new turbos (TD05-16g's; paid for but don't have them yet) will do 520 cfm each and cost $1800 total, including adapter flanges and everything it takes to bolt in place of stock. This setup is new, but it's already pushed a couple of convertibles (4300+ lbs) to 11.80s at 122-123 mph. I only wish we had half of the Buick aftermarket for both pricing and innovation.

There are dozens of them in the 11s and 3-4 verifiably in the 10s. Will they ever see 9s or quicker? Probably not. My personal goal is low 11s and traps over 120 in as-driven form. Then I'll be happy (or so I keep telling myself now anyway). I also refuse to remove any weight from my car; I will not sacrifice comfort or drivability in the name of speed.

Downpipe and injectors are a huge benefit for stock turbo Buicks once they get into the 12's. The stock squirters are barely suitable at that level and the stock DP on these cars is a joke.
I don't think the 3S platform is "junk". They seem to run fairly well, but remember, not only is it a twin-turbo, but it's also a 24-valve, twin cam motor.
How much boost do those things run and what fuel?
