2001 SS vs 69 396 SS?
Well I came here because I know this is the place to ask. A friend of mine says a stock 69 396 SS chevelle 4 spd will beat my 2001 SS m6 in the 1/4 mile. I never said I would beat one, but I said I would give him a good run. Well he went off on me about the big block pulling me on top end. So I said I know where to go to ask about this match up. This would be a 350 hp 69 not a 375 I know the 375 would be to much for me for sure. So has anyone ever heard about a match like this or seen one at the strip. Thanks! I mean he doesn't give me a chance and I still say I'll give him a good run.

Re: 2001 SS vs 69 396 SS?
If both are stock...the Camaro wins hands down. With the exception of 66-67 I have owned every big block Chevelle they had between 68-72 ( except a Yenko). Even the 375hp in stock form you could take...heavy cars with no traction. My 1970 LS6 I had ran a 13.2 stock and they were the fastest of the Chevelles.

Thanks for the fast replies I know you guys know that's why I came here. OK! I have a better feeling about this now, just have to make sure it is really stock you know how that goes. Oh! I bet you wish you had that LS6 back that's a very rare and hard car to find. Thanks again!
Re: 2001 SS vs 69 396 SS?
i street raced a '68 chevelle ss last spring. it definately had headers, low gears and a big-assed cam. i took him out of the hole and pulled on him all the way to the top of my second gear (around 75-ish) when i let off. i had him by about 2-3 cars, and this was before i swapped an ls6 cam into my car. i wanted to ask him about his mods, but he and his buddy turned off.

That was me you raced, I let you win. LMAO j/k.
About this future race, you should win as long as you put a couple car lengths on him at launch. Your going to love racing old muscle !!!
I know I love beating up on new muscle... LOL
When my car was under-cammed (only made 380 HP); I raced an LS-1 TA and it was a GREAT race. It went back and forth all the way to 110. Funny thing was I was the one inching away up top... hahah go figure?
Anyways...good luck

the biggest problem with old school muscle is that it's all too easy to mis-match mods and blow any kind of synergy. that was one of the reasons that i wanted to ask the guy i raced about his mods. too many folks think big cam and big carb means big power. it's just not that simple, as i'm sure that you know.
Re: 2001 SS vs 69 396 SS?
IF he is truley stock in that old chevelle you will rape, then bloody murder him. All you have to do is get your car to hook, and you should slaughter him.
Remeber that in 1969 they rated cars by SAE gross hp. Gross HP was just the engine dynoing without any accesorries to zap power. Net HP is what they rate cars with now(started in early 70's), which includes all of the accesories and a full emmissions complient exhaust when the engine is rated on the dyno.
Also remeber that the Chevelle is a very large car, that is made out completely out of steel. Back before they came up with this plastic, aluminium engine, and fiberglass crap.
So your car is significantly lighter than his.
