00 Z28 vs EVO III
I was driving through town today and came upon an EVO VIII. I pulled up behind him and could tell he was running in a fairly low gear. I pulled up beside him and he up and takes off. I follow suit, but once I reached about 70 in a 35 I let off. He turned onto a highway outside of town that has light traffic and is fairly straight, so I followed him. He takes off as soon as he gets straight (40mph) and goes up to about 80 before he lets off. We were staying even from the time we take off until the time we let off. Once again, while I was behind him, the takes off, this time going about 50, and gets the jump on me. We run up to around 100 this time and I am starting to pull ever so slightly. The last time we ran we were once again going about 50 and are side by side. At the beginning he jumps me by about 1/2 a car (his rear bumper was at my door) and pulls ever so slowly until about 75 to a lead of about 1.5 car lengths (half a car length between his rear bumper and my front bumper). Once we reach about 95 I slowly start to pull on him and by the time we reach 115 I am a full car ahead of him and let off at about 130 with about 2.5 car lead. I didn't get a chance to talk to him, but it looked like a stock car. All in all I was very impressed.

Compare today back to the pathetic offerings of the '80s (Remember: The Pre-LT1 C4 was being RAPED in the press by the Turbocharged 4-banger 944 as well as just about every other comparable Import) and you'll find that the American V8 is more alive than it ever was.
The Evos and STis are just competition. I'm glad Japan finally pulled its head out of its *** and brought some of their better turbocharged offerings. Competition breeds the better product.
