What do stiffer rear springs do?

2001 SS: I have Koni double adjustable shocks in the rear, full soft on rebound and factory setting on compression. I upgraded the panhard bar and lca's and have the SLP Eibach springs.

Rebound still seems a bit much, and the car feels loose and bouncy in the rear. What would stiffer springs do? What about softer springs?

Used for a daily driver.

Stiff springs if you don't need them well make the rear end more prone to come around on you.

Think of a flatbed truck when nothing is loaded it rides rough over bumps(live axle) but it has HD springs and when its loaded the springs are made to handle it.

Most people use too much of a rear spring. 150#(thats what sams uses on his stock car) is like MAX I like more around stock or hair bit more if you can find it.

Thats why I stayed with stock springs.

you might want to look into some of Sams new springs he has made

Re: What do stiffer rear springs do?

Understanding your dampers would be a good start.... First, the shocks aren't "factory set", so the compression could be anywhere and one reason I don't generally use DA's is that anything more than full soft is generally too much. And the rebound isn't too high, the loose sloppy feeling is not generally ENOUGH rebound force.

the LCA's may have hurt the rear suspension on bumps, not helped it.

Re: What do stiffer rear springs do?

Thanks:

1. By "factory set" on the D/a's I mean seven clicks from soft on the compression. This is the way it came from the factory. I tried full hard and full soft on compression. I may go a bit softer than seven clicks [middle setting].

2. The rear end is loose and sloppy, yet if I increase the rebound, it bounces too much. The LCA's did help with some of the loosness, and I can't tell what else they did.

3. "Stiff springs" yes, it is like a flatbed truck. If I put a 50 lb. bag of salt in the back, the rear suspension works much better.

Any more suggstions/ideas?

Re: What do stiffer rear springs do?

i have QA1 shocks, QA1 325# springs in the front, and stock ta rear springs. the only complaint i have is it should be a little lower on the rear...i have no rubber inserts and i would like another 1/5" out of them...but oh well. i have an awesome handling ride (for me any way...i know the car like the back of my hand) and would suggest a similar setup to anyone.

you may think about just leaving your stock springs in and getting a rear sway bar for help in the turns...something to think about.

Re: What do stiffer rear springs do?

I think it is fixed:

1. I installed Energy suspension Endlinks in the front and rear. The original stock bushings were heavily worn. It is amazing the difference new end links and bushings make.

2. I set compression on the rear shocks from seven clicks from full soft to five clicks from full soft. Rebound at one half turn from full soft. [I do understand the dampers ]

Now the car corners with very little roll; there is good balance and it only goes into [very controllable] oversteer with heavy throttle, and there is good traction in the rear out of corners. Rear end loosness is not a problem. The ride is not that bumpy given the relatively stiff suspension. The endlinks were key.
