Squeaking When Brakes Are Not Applied?

Hey everyone. 94 3.4 camaro w/ 139,000 miles. I used to have a problem with my brakes screeching (high pitched, not that bad scraping), until I got my new pads. But after that, I hear a squeaking coming from somewhere when brakes are not being applied and it stops when I put on the brakes. It makes a circular kind of sound and speeds up when I speed up. What could this be?

Anti-squeal shims removed when the brake job was preformed.

I just had this problem. It is called a wear indicator. It is right by your caliper it is stuck to the rotor causing it to make this circular noise while driving. All you have to do is take a flat head screwdriver and pull it off of the rotor and your problem is solved.

Thanks! So I don't need the wear indicator? What if it starts to wear, when will I know? Is the circular sounds a sign of wear?

just check every few weeks. But if they are new pads, their wear indicator shouldn't be touching anything. you may have to investigate. also make sure caliper pins are lubed and try some anti-squeal grease behind the pads where they touch the caliper

No keep the wear indictor on just take a flat head screw driver and bend it back. The reason this noise comes is to tell you when your brakes are wearing out. But, whoever did your brakes forgot to bend it back so the circular sound would stop. But no problem glad i could assist you.

Re: Squeaking When Brakes Are Not Applied?

wear indcators are supposed to be on the pads not the rotor or caliper!!!
may be a splash shield on the spindle(which may have been bent during the brake job), but thats it!!

Re: Squeaking When Brakes Are Not Applied?

Yeah i had this same problem just 3 days ago. My brakes are getting bad and are causing this same exact circular motion noise and it was the wear indictator. So you tell me what else would do this? I can guarantee it is the wear indicator.
