Rear brakes squeek - Stop when I pull the E-Brake?
Rear brakes squeek - Stop when I pull the E-Brake?
I replaced my rear pads/rotors about a year ago because someone drove the car w/ the e-brake on and destroyed the old brakes. Anyways I got the rotors from autzone and just got some cheapo pads because I figured it was just the rear brakes which dont do much anyhow.
IT's been a year now and it seems they always like to squeek a lot when braking medium-hard and will continueto squeek until I come to a stop.
While driving straight I can also hear something which sounds like a pad rubbing..kinda of like squeek...squeek..squeek...squeek. Its hard to hear from inside the car but if I drive along side a cement wall or a fence you can hear it bounce off.
The kicker is if I am braking and they are squeeking and I pull the e-brake it instantly stops squeeken.
I already took both pads off, and re-lubbed them all up w/ that gelly on the back of the pads and even sande the pads a tad. Did nothing.
So it appears something is message up. Where should I start. New pads?
And why the hell does the ebrake have an effect on it?

I'm gona get some Gran Sport G6's like I just got for my fronts and see if that'll fix it, but doesnt explain the e-brake thing? According to TireRack they are rated above the Hawk pads. My front ones are doing good, little dusty but I pound on them.
Here is the solution.
One or maybe both of the rear rotors is rubbing a rear caliper bracket. I can almost guarentee this is causing the noise, it happens on LT1 rear brakes a lot.
There are two fixes.
The first is to remove the caliper bracket from the axle (2 bolts) and slide the bracket off off the caliper (just slide it off).
If you look closely at the bracket you will see the spots where the rotor is rubbing, you will also see the circular marks on the rotor too.
Get the disk grinder out and clearance the bracket in the areas where the contact is occuring and reassemble. I had to do this two times to completely silence the squeak.
The second method is to place a pair of thin washers or shims behind the bracket where it bolts to the axle. You are trying to slightly move the caliper bracket outward just a bit. I think GM actually sells the shim kit for this exact problem, however i dont know the part number.
The reason this happens is normal wear on the axle c-clips and or doing a R&P change. The axle is now allowed to extend outward in a hard turn and the rotor makes the loud squeak when it contacts the caliper bracket

This doesn't explain why it happens when I am going straight and braking or why pulling the e-brake helps?

Have you even looked at the areas I suggeted?
This is what happened to me, take it or leave it.

I have full 2002 12" brakes in my 1995.

Okay, I think I may have figured out what you guys are talking about but a little better description wouldn't of hurt. Here's what I did.
I took the two bolts off that keep the caliper in place of the rotor. They are right behing the rotor and they are parallel to each other, 15mm I believe. Caliper loose, take out the brake pads and slide the caliper bracket off, the thing that should have the 2 rubber boots. I took off the rubber boots and put 2 washers in each boot inside the boot and slipped the boot back into position. You can't really put the washers on the outside of the boot cause it dosen't work right, only inside the boot. Slide the caliper bracket on and put the pads back in and put the bolts back in. You will notice if you looked at the clearance before that the gap between the pads and the rotor has closed in a little more. This is the objective. I guess before there was too much slopp between the pad and rotor. You have to push in the rotor against the axle to see the gap.
The squeak is down by 75% and it dosen't make a sound when I make a turn. I think if I put one more washer in on both sliders it will do the trick.
It does kinda feel like I'm on the brake a little when I drive. It might be my imagination though. Would it make a noise if the pads were too close? If it does make a noise I'm in the clear but if it doesn't make a noise??????
I'm gonna go back and clean and lube it all tomorrow, how should I clean and lubricate the brakes? What a pro would do on a brake job.
Maybe you can give a little more description on what to grind off the caliper. I didn't really notice a wear line on the rotor and I didn't see a spot on the caliper bracket that needed to be grinded.
Thanks for the help guys, we should make a good copy and sticky this post, what a PITA this squeak problem is, huh!

I was able to put washers between the caliper and the bracket without taking anything else apart...Basically just spacing the caliper off from the bracket the width of the washer...This is with the Strange LT1 caliper backing plates, though...

I cleaned my calipers w/ 2 cans of brake cleaner and used some sandpaper to clean the rust spots on the axle and rotor. I also sandpapered the pads. I used some lube on the pads and the pins and cylinder. I also lubed the axle and the back of the rotor where metal touched metal. I lubed everything that touched metal and that moves.
I used 3 washers and the wheel was hard to turn but I still wanted to try it. I went around the block a few times and parked. A little smoke came out of the driver rear where I put the washers and the rotor was a lot hotter than the other 3. I knew this was not good but I did not have any squeaks
I jacked it up again and used only 2 washers and it worked. It only has the slightest hiss when I drive, not a squeak at all. I'm willing to live with it, I believe I have fixed my problem. I guess 2 washers and a real good cleaning and lube really did the trick. I just hope it holds up this good.
