Possible brake upgrade?
Possible brake upgrade?
If anyone has seen the new baer monoblock calipers, please chime in on this thread. I know a lot of people on here swear by the c5 brake upgrade, so I want to know if the "mono-block" style caliper is better than the c5 caliper. I did a search on ebay for "monoblock brake" and came up with one match- Porsche 986 rear calipers. I would just like to know if it would be a worthwhile endeavor to put these on instead of the ls1 calipers. I'll probably never spring for a c5 conversion or the baer 6-piston setup, just too much money involved.
Right now I'm still just kicking around the idea, so any input is good input.

Re: Possible brake upgrade?
The cheapest brake upgrade is probably to the Willwood 6 piston calipers (under $1500). I am personally not sold on their quality myself. The Baer Claw 2 piston (what I currently have on my Z) is pretty much the same as the Z06 upgrade, which is superior IMO to the LS1 brakes. You can get the Baer claw for around $900. If you want to go crazy (which some day I plan on doing) and if you have the wheel clearence, you can go with some Brembo 6 piston, or some Baer 6 piston calipers. Whatever you do, make sure you get good pads and some decent rotors to back up the stopping power, otherwise you are wasting your money.
Re: Possible brake upgrade?
Are you looking to improve your front brakes or rear??
Biggest limiting factor on the rear LS1 brakes is the small brake pad size. And even if you wanted to mount calipers that would hold larger pads, the rear of the rotor has half the swept area of the front because of the parking brake.

Front and rear. Apparently most of the new Porsches come with monoblock calipers all the way around and agressive stability control systems, meaning you'd either have to adapt their wheel speed sensors to be read by a gm computer (tough), or eliminate the sensors altogether (not so tough). If I went through with it, I would of course try to retain my traction control features. I wonder how much of a pita that would be?
