Panhard Rod Bolt - Question.
Panhard Rod Bolt - Question.
I'm replacing the Bolt / Nut for the panhard... (stock one's MIA)
The stock bolt (at least that's what I removed) was a shoulder bolt. It was 9/16 right on the head, but a smaller piece half way through probably a 16mm?. I bought the 9/16 shoulder Bolt from Lowes (Grade 8 - apparently best for automotive use) but its 9/16 all the way through.
Now the 9/16 Fits nice inside the panhard rod... and it fits the first entry point for the bolt in the rearend, obviously it doesn't fit all the way through.
The Stock bolt doesn't quite sit right. It has play on it when installed. Meaning it "twist" as you can see, obviously, the smaller bolt doesn't fit inside the panhard quite well to keep it from "twisting."
My question is... doesn't anyone know if this was by design that it should twist??? Or was the stock panhard rod "sized - internally " the same way as the nut is? I'm thinking of drilling the other end of the hole to make the 9/16 bolt go all the way through.
Thoughts?

Re: Panhard Rod Bolt - Question.
The bolt is stepped. The final thread is smaller than the smooth shank of the bolt.
All three of the long bolts are the same. If you have any of the other two you should be able to check the fit.
Not a part you can buy from a hardware store. GM p/n's below.

Re: Panhard Rod Bolt - Question.
hes right about the stepped bolt, and if its anythign like my 87,i have to put the bolt in from front to rear.seems the back hole is smaller than the front to accept the smaller stepped portion of the bolt(threads)
Re: Panhard Rod Bolt - Question.
Thanks Z28Bartnet for the P/N and Anthony for the reply.
Just making sure we're talking about the same piece here. I'm not referring to the "panhard support bar" but the panhard rod itself. Since you mentioend 3 bolts, I figured that's what you were referring to. Are the P/N you gave me the same for the panhard bar?
You think it would cause any problems if I make the Exit hole the same size as the entry hole of 9/16?

All three of the long horizontal bolts/nuts are the same, you have one at each end of the panhard rod and one at the upper panhard brace. I am not talking about the three small vertical bolts that go from the upper panhard brace into the body.
Why mess with drilling the holes and possible but unlikely problems, just buy the bolt and you are done.
